It is an honor to present from Canada : Elle Kerr  – Spectacular Teen Canada 2022 – Miss Teen Universe Canada 2021, being very young, Elle has clear goals and a project to help the women we will meet in an interview, in addition to her motivations, great passions, thoughts and tips.

Welcome Elle Kerr!!!

1.- Elle , you were born in Canada ,What do you like about your hometown in Canada? What are your hobbies?

When thinking about Mississauga, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s the “Toronto” Pearson airport (Canada’s largest and busiest airport with over 32 million passengers daily), or perhaps it’s Colonel Sanders (the founder of KFC), who used to reside in the city of Mississauga. Perhaps it’s even the famous Hazel McCallion: the world’s oldest mayor at the age of 93! Although all these fantastic facts contribute to making my hometown unique and special, what I love the most about Mississauga is the diversity of people. Known as the international mosaic of cultures, Mississauga is home to over 145 different languages. In fact, one of my favorite picnic spots right in the heart of the city was built in honor of Mississauga’s sister city, Kariya, Japan (featuring Japanese cherry blossoms and all sorts of Japanese decor).

Some of my hobbies include dancing, watching movies/tv shows, trying new foods, reading, baking, and drawing! I really like to explore all kinds of new things so I pick up a lot of hobbies along the way. Especially with COVID-19, I was given a lot of time to explore new activities such as knitting, sewing, and playing the ocarina.

2.- What makes you laugh a lot or does it give you a lot of joy?

I absolutely love dancing! I have been doing ballet for over 10 years and recently started self-learning new dance styles like K-pop and lyrical. I started my training at the National Ballet School of Canada at the age of 6 and even took examinations at the Royal Academy of Dance up until the intermediate foundation level. Last year, I started a dance club at my school where we come together every week to learn new dances and share our passions with one another. Dancing has always been my safe space and where I express myself the most. Whenever I feel overwhelmed with work or stress, I would take some time to move my body. Beyond that, I also enjoy baking cupcakes, playing the piano, reading, binge-watching tv shows, and taking long walks with my sister.

3.- Spectacular  Teen Canada 2022 – Miss Teen Universe Canada 2021, When do you decide to take your First steps as a model and beauty pageants? What feeling do you have achieving your dreams, your passions?

I took my first step into pageantry for two main reasons: to try something new and to expand on my previous works. Being quarantined over the summer, I started to browse the internet for activities that I could try to step out of my comfort zone. I have never done any sort of modeling or pageantry before and I thought it would be a fun experience to meet new people from across Canada and “What’s the worst that could happen?”. I then did more research about the ins and outs of pageantry and found out that it had so much more to offer. It provides girls with the opportunity to create a platform on a specific issue that they cared deeply about and even provides a vast audience to promote to. We are encouraged to research our cause, create speeches, do awareness campaigns, fundraisers and so much more to be an active member of our society. I took this opportunity to continue working on promoting Women in STEM (which has been something that I have been previously working on in a non-profit organization) and utilized the pageant platform to further expand my work.

4.- What do you think is the distinctive, unique stamp of Elle in each activity carried out as a person and Miss Teen?

My platform! As I have briefly mentioned before, I have centered my platform on speaking out about the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) career fields. Currently, women only make up about 28% of the STEM workforce and earn a substantially less wage compared to that of a man. Due to the under representation, gender stereotypes, and societal norms, young girls are less inclined to pursue STEM degrees and jobs.

As Miss Teen Universe Canada 2021, my goal is to inspire young girls and break through these stereotypes. I want to show everyone that girls are just as intelligent as men and that pageant girls can be academically inclined.

5.- Whats is the main virtue that any woman must have to be  model or Miss Teen Canada?

I don’t believe that there are any requirements or guidelines that someone must meet in order to participate in pageants or to become a model. What’s so amazing about this industry – that is often overlooked with previous misconceptions- is that you don’t need to be the perfect, pretty, tall, and slim girl that is characterized by our current beauty standards in society. Organizations such as Miss Teen Universe work toward allowing every girl to express their inner beauty and look for individuality. We aren’t judged on how well we fit being “pretty”, but rather on how versed we are in public speaking, and how confident we are in our own bodies and our personalities. Any girl who is not only passionate about what she is doing but also determined and confident in her abilities will make a great model or pageant queen!

6.- Are you aware of being an influential woman for thousands of girls  Who want to be models? How important is it to you to be an idol for many girls and teenagers?

It’s unbelievable. Even now, I find it hard to believe that I have such a vast audience within the pageant community and it feels unreal. To me, it is incredibly important to make sure that I use this platform with care and to ensure that my content is inspiring. I started my journey with the hope of promoting awareness for Women in STEM and that is the main goal I hoped to achieve. I promoted various events and opportunities that I was a part of running throughout the year in order to provide underprivileged children around the world with accessible resources. I think that social media is such a powerful tool and it’s crucial for all influencers/models to understand just how much impact they have on girls around the world, so it’s important that it isn’t used in a negative way. We must spread awareness, promote positive messages and stay away from harmful comments.

7.- What was your feeling the first time you modeled in front of a video camera?

It was nerve-wracking. Although I have previous experience with video productions from dance performances and various school projects, modeling in front of a camera for a pageant was very different. I recall waking up early in the morning one day and driving to a small park in Toronto to record my first ever evening gown walk since Miss Teen Universe Canada was an online pageant. Being all dressed up, a lot of people were watching me which made the experience even more frightening. What made it worse was that I also didn’t know how to work with the camera. I remember struggling to understand the angles, facial expressions, poses, and a million different things during the shoot. However, by working closely with my mom, and watching and rewatching the footage, I was able to gain confidence. I no longer felt nervous and started to fully enjoy the experience which is the most important aspect of any activity.

8.- What do you think about the power of social media today?

I have mixed opinions on social media. With good intentions, it can be a powerful tool used to empower and educate people on a massive scale. In the past, people have used it to spread awareness on world events, to send out strong positive messages, and is even used as a creative outlet for millions of people to show off their work. Social media can build a sense of community and connect you with people all around the world from the comfort of your own home. However, when used in the wrong way, it can be an incredibly harmful app. Studies have shown that spending more than three hours a day on social media puts adolescents at a higher risk of mental health issues. Approximately 49% of 18-24-year-olds report mental health challenges as a direct result of social media. It is a source of bullying, unrealistic expectations, and normalizes risk-taking behaviors. It’s important to remind ourselves that what we see on social media is not always the truth and to keep in touch with our reality. Our worth is not based on the number of likes and views that we get on our posts/stories, and we must not let the words of others bring us down.

9.- How do you like to interact with your followers on social media? Whats your favorite social media?

My favorite social media platforms are Instagram and Tik Tok. Instagram makes it super easy to connect with followers by sharing stories, posting images, and also through direct messages where people have the opportunity to have one on one conversations with me and ask any questions privately. It’s also a very widespread platform with millions of users which makes it convenient to use. On the other hand, I enjoy using Tik Tok in my free time because it curates the content for each user. It has its own uniqueness that allows small content creators to go viral quickly which makes it much more relatable than other social media platforms. Personally, I really enjoy watching funny clips, learning new facts, and keeping up with important news on Tik Tok.

10.- What would you advise young people who have talent but do not dare to take the next step? What would you advise parents who do not support their children’s talents?

I want to say that there is nothing to be afraid of! It’s completely normal to feel anxious venturing away from your comfort zone, it’s human nature. However, we can’t live in fear. Sometimes it’s important to not overthink your decisions and just to give them a try. If it doesn’t work out, then you can choose to pursue something else, however, at least you know that you put your best effort in and don’t regret never taking risks.

To all the parents who don’t support their children’s talents, It’s important to remember that sometimes people view the world differently. As parents, your goal is to make sure that your children are living a happy and fulfilling life, and communicating with them to find their wants and needs is important. Although we may have our own perception of what is best, it’s important to allow your child to take some risks and explore their personal dreams and talents.

11.- What important lessons have you learned from the world of fashion and beauty pageants?

The main lesson I learned was to be confident! I have always been a very shy and reserved person who doesn’t like to initiate conversations- especially with strangers. It was difficult for me to find the courage to do public speaking and I struggled with self-confidence. However, through pageantry, I was able to find a way to start breaking out of my old habits. I’ve started to learn to practice self-love and got opportunities to practice public speaking. Through pageants, I got to meet a variety of truly incredible people from all around the world who I wouldn’t have met if I didn’t branch out. Overall, I think this experience really helped me become a better version of myself and I will take these lessons with me far into the future.

12.- Elle, being Miss Teen Universe Canada for you has been easy? Were there obstacles? How did you overcome obstacles?

It has been a roller coaster of emotions. As I previously mentioned, I had no prior experience going into this pageant. I had no idea what I needed to do and how I was going to do it. I also struggled with having to talk to strangers, doing public events, and being in the center of the spotlight. However thanks to my amazing pageant director Mercy Maddox, I was able to get the proper guidance in being a pageant queen. Over time as I practiced more, I started to get the hang of the process and began to enjoy the experience.

13.- Have you thought about being an actress? Do you like the entertainment industry?

It has definitely crossed my mind once or twice. I always found the entertainment industry to be really fascinating since it provides such a drastically different experience. You get to meet all kinds of different people on a daily basis, create your own schedule, travel around the world and so much more. However, my goal has always been to pursue a job within the STEM industry as I am a very STEM-oriented learner. I love exploring topics in math and chemistry, conducting personal research, and solving complex problems.

14.- Worldwide, women have acquired a greater role even though there are societies where they are still abused. What is your opinion of the role of women in the future in these societies?

For centuries, women have been oppressed. Stripped from basic human rights due to the basis of sex and gender. This form of inequality has impacted both the quality and safety of women’s lives as they struggle to fight domestic/sexual violence, lower pay, inadequate healthcare, and lack of accessible education. Although these issues are starting to become addressed in the 21st century, many countries still struggle to entitle women to the same rights as men. Women deserve the right to live free from discrimination, to be educated, to be treated with respect, and to have their voices heard, and it’s up to us to continue fighting for what we believe is right. We need to continue to raise our voices by volunteering for women’s rights organizations (e.g. Amnesty International), donating to fundraisers, attending protests, and sharing on social media. This way, we can continue to push towards a better society free of discrimination and provide women with the resources to create their own future.

15.- Elle, what is your motivation and what do you feel grateful for every day?

I’m motivated by the people around me. I’m so grateful to have such an amazing and supportive family that continues to push me to be the best version of myself. They always inspire me to keep trying new things even when I’m hesitant, giving me advice and words of encouragement. When I first mentioned wanting to participate in a pageant, they were incredibly supportive of my decision and didn’t push away my sudden request. I am also incredibly grateful to my friends and school community who continue to follow along my journey and hype me up. They are what makes it all worth it!

16.- Elle Do you like to travel? What countries do you know? What other countries would you like to know and which places do you recommend to visit from Canada?

Definitely! It’s on my bucket list to travel around the world one day and see as many different countries as possible and explore what they have to offer. So far I’ve been to Canada, The United States, China, and England, and I have plans to travel to the Dominican Republic in September to compete in the Miss Spectacular Teen pageant.

To anyone who is looking to travel to Canada, I would suggest making a stop in Toronto. Not only is it the largest city in Canada, but it has a wide range of tourist attractions. Referred to as the country’s cultural hot spot, Toronto offers extraordinary shopping, museums, waterfront activities, fine dining, and festivals throughout the year for people to explore. For a change of scenery, I would also suggest traveling to either Banff or PEI to explore the great outdoors. Canada has approximately 48 national parks that showcase the incredible diversity of our land and is great for those that love to explore the outdoors.
