It is an honor to present from Belize one of the most beautiful women in the world, Selena Urias, Miss International Belize 2019 – Reina Hispanoamericana Belize 2018 – Miss Tropico Belize 2018 – Miss Universe Belize finalist.
Selene a gave an interview to our founder Jaime William Mostacero Baca and tells us about his career, great passions and great joy for representing the world to such a beautiful country, Belize.
1.- Selena , you were born in Belize ,What do you like about your hometown in Belize? What are your hobbies? What makes you laugh a lot or does it give you a lot of joy?
As a proud Belizean, there are so many things to like about my country. Belize is Central America’s hidden gem and if there is one thing that I like about my hometown, it is the unique blend of rich cultures that we have.
My hobbies involve cooking, exercising, traveling, and reading. Inspiring others through my own life experiences is what brings me great joy. It brings me joy to know that I planted a seed in somebody’s heart.
2.- Model , beauty queen, Miss International Belize 2019 – Reina Hispanoamericana Belize 2018 – Miss Tropico Belize 2018 – Miss Universe Belize finalist When do you decide to take your first steps as a model and beauty pageants?
I decided to take on modeling in 2015 when I was in college. I began with photoshoots for various boutiques up to today and also took part in fashion shows as time went by. Nevertheless, I yearned for more and one day I decided to attend a pageant casting in 2017. Fortunately, I became a selected candidate even though I did not make it to the top. In 2018 I got up again because I knew I had potential to make my country proud and made it to Miss Belize Universe 2018 as a finalist. Again, I didn’t win the crown but another door opened and I was appointed as Miss Hispanoamerica Belize 2018 which gave me my first opportunity to represent Belize on an international stage. It was then that I realized that my hard work had paid off. I had made my country proud even though we didn’t place but we made our debut! Then in 2019 I was also selected as Miss Belize International through a casting and I was honored to represent my country in Japan where we obtained the Purple and Orange Ribbon Award which is to raise awareness against domestic violence of women & children. These were all building blocks of growth for me.
3.- What feeling do you have achieving your dreams, your passions and being a recognized woman today?
First of all I am very thankful to God for blessing me with all these opportunities. I feel very proud of myself to have finally achieved my dreams and passions. I’ve realized that nothing in life comes easy and that you must work hard to achieve it. I am thankful for all the overwhelming love and support from my family, fans and friends. I know I have left a legacy behind and I don’t want to be recognized for the woman that I am today but for the things I did to make a nation proud.
4.- What do you think is the distinctive, unique stamp of Selena in each activity carried out as a person and model?
I think that the unique and distinctive stamp of myself in everything I do as a person, model and beauty ambassador is my authenticity. It is important to be yourself in everything that you do because people will remember you for that. By being myself I’m able to create a unique brand that cannot be duplicated.
5.- What was your feeling the first time you modeled in front of a video camera? What did you feel the first time at a beauty pageant?
Modeling in front of a video camera and being in a pageant for the first time was a bit nerve wrecking but at the same time one of the best feelings ever knowing that it is the start of a new phase in your life overcoming many fears and challenges. I felt accomplished and proud.
6.- What do you think about the power of social networks today?
I think that social networks are very influential in the world today. It is a powerful medium which can be used positively or negatively. Social networks can tarnish one’s reputation if not used for good. In fact, cyber bullying for example, is a common action that derived from social networks. Nevertheless, social networks can also be used as mediums of communication across the world, business advertisement, motivational platforms and for education.
7.- What would you advise young people who have talent but do not dare to take the next step? What would you advise parents who do not support their children’s talents?
My advise to young talented people who may not dare to take the next step is to believe in themselves because when you believe is yourself you have already taken on the first step in your journey. Remember that as young people you are powerful beings able to transmit inspiration to the world.
On the other hand, my advise to parents who are not supporting the talents of their children is to be the fuel to their dreams and to guide them in everything they do. Be their number one fan because maybe that’s all they need.
8.- What important lessons have you learned from the world of fashion and beauty pageants?
The world of fashion and beauty pageants has taught me many lessons. I’ve learnt that nothing is impossible and that sometimes you must step out of your comfort zone to discover your authentic self. I have also learnt that good things take time. Nothing in life comes overnight and you must work hard to be successful.
9.- Worldwide, women have acquired a greater role even though there are societies where they are still abused. What is your opinion of the role of women in the future in these societies?
It is true, that women have acquired great roles in society today nevertheless, some women are still living under abuse which affects 1 of 3 women around the world. As women we have rights and deserve respect and dignity. “Women are leaders everywhere you look — from the CEO who runs a Fortune 500 company to the housewife who raises her children and heads her household. Our country was built by strong women, and we will continue to break down walls and defy stereotypes.”
10.- Selena, what is your motivation and what do you feel grateful for every day?
My motivation to work hard everyday are my siblings. I became a mother to them when my mother passed away 4 years ago. Ever since I decided to step out of my comfort zone so that they could be happy no matter what. I am grateful for health everyday. Being healthy allows me to keep going each day of my life.
11.- Selena Do you like to travel? What countries do you know? What other countries would you like to know and which places do you recommend to visit from Belize, your country?
I love traveling! So far I have had the fortune to visit Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Poland, Bolivia and Japan. My dream is to travel to many countries as possible but to be specific I would like to visit Italy, Colombia, Dubai and Egypt. There are many tourist attractions in Belize as well. If you ever visit Belize o would recommend you to visit the maya ruins, the cayes and the Blue Hole.
