In an exclusive for our tenth anniversary Perumira, leading journalist, anchor and columnist Fariha Farrukh, originally from Pakistan, reveals her career marked by passion and commitment to the truth. 1.- Fariha, tell me about the city where you were born and raised.,What do you like about your hometown?
I was born in Lahore,the city often termed as the heart of Pakistan.It is famous for its rich heritage,diverse culture,amazing cuisines & hospitable people.
2.- What are your hobbies? what makes you laugh a lot or gives you joy?
I believe music is like food to the soul irrespective of the language.so,listening to music is a must.i love to read books alot as they take you to a world of their own,give you knowledge & at times inspire you alot. i aim at writing one of my own too soon.
I love spending time with my family & friends as thats the time i laugh the most ! Because you can be yourself & celebrate the craziness we all hold inside of us & gets rusted if we fail to unleash it.
3.-Journalist – TV Presenter . When did you decide to take your first steps as a communicator? What feeling do you have achieving your dreams, your passions and being a recognized influencer woman today?
I was into extempore style debates since my early school days & communication skills were always my plus point.I started the journey as a journalist/tv presenter about 2 years ago.I am deeply inspired by The first Pakistani female Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. This is my first step towards achieving my goals.I have a strong belief that women must be empowered & add towards the progress of the society as a whole. So fars achievements give me immense pleasure plus an impetus to do much more in life globally.We owe our existance to the Humanity so this shall form my future ambition.
4.- What do you think is the distinctive, unique stamp of Fariha in each activity carried out as a communicator?
Fariha speaks the truth,stands against all odds strongly amidst a typical patriarchal society. She is tenacious ,resilient and focused . The command over languages & the tone of respect for all is the stamp to her communicative skills .
5.- Whats is the main virtue that any woman must have to be a journalist?
Fearless & targetted
6.- Are you aware of being an influential woman for thousands of girls who want to be jourlanists? How important is it to you to be an idol for many girls and teenagers?
I feel that as i hold influence over girls & women being a journalist,i have a huge responsibilty never to give up plus be a source of inspiration. The more impact i have and as i see the influence grow i would leave a mark so many more girls/women learn to believe in themselves & snap out of self doubt.
7.- What was your feeling the first time in front of a video camera?
My first time in front of the camera was as if i was meeting myself.I felt as if the camera knew me & i knew it since forever. I realised i was born for it !
8.- What do you think about the power of social media today?
I believe today the social media has the most influence in shaping up peoples opinions. As compared to mainstream media it is a forum that gives you complete freedom to voice out your views & gives you independence from the monopoly that sadly sits in as a mafia which doesnt provide much growth and even chances to many people to prove themselves.
9.- How do you like to interact with your followers on social media? Whats your favorite social media?
I hold my followers very close to my heart. They make me who i am. I try to connect with them to the best of my capabilities. Instagram is my favourite!
10.- What would you advise young people who have talent but do not dare to take the next step? What would you advise parents who do not support their children’s talents?
My advise to all is dare to dream & make it happen. With conviction,consistence & focus you can do wonders .
I would request Parents to support their children rather than leaving them alone to battle the ups and downs of life. Your words of kindness at times are all that they need & you can make them achievers from mere dreamers. Dont break them,dont put them down.
11.- What important lessons have you learned from TV world?
I learnt that for a new talent,the path is often too tough.People who actually have ruled the tv world get intimidated. At times your worth scares them & the result is they will not give you a chance to show what you have & what you can do. Especially being a woman in a male dominated society,its very tough. But again my lesson learnt was never let them doubt your self worth & everytime someone puts you down,get up and show them what you can do .
12.- Fariha, being a communicator for you has been easy? Were there obstacles?How did you overcome obstacles?
Interestingly,for me communication comes naturally. I have been blessed in this aspect. I have interviewed many famous politicians and even the ordinary masses of Pakistan and each time communication was conveniently interactive & positive. So absolutely no obstacles in this.
13.- Have you thought about being an actress? Do you like the entertainment industry?
I believe we all are actors in our daily lives too. We have so many faces & we act all day long. I believe some are aware of their intrinsic quality and some are not. I may at sometime want to act but that has to be a project worthwhile. I love dancing so thats a plus point.
14.- Worldwide, women have acquired a greater role even though there are societies where they are still abused. What is your opinion of the role of women in the future in these societies?
Women suffer violence & abuse worldwide. Sadly in our country,they are treated as a second grade citizen & made to subjugate to either to the men of their own family or at work places to their male bosses. However,voicing it out boldy & taking stand for own self respect in the face of abuse is the key towards being a succesful woman. Mostly,women that become successfull had no choice and that i say that from my heart and maybe experience i might share later on. They could either give up & dim down or stand tall .
15.- Fariha, what is your motivation and what do you feel grateful for every day?
My motivation is the belief of many girls & women who look towards me as an inspiration. Their hopes dont let me give up & i feel greatful each day for this . I am the hope for many ,what more could i wish for .
16.- Fariha, Do you like to travel? What countries do you know? What other countries would you like to know and which places do you recommend to visit from your country?
I love to travel & have been to 13 states in the USA,parts of UK,greece,UAE,Saudi Arabia,France & Switzerland.I love beaches though.
I want to travel across the world as seeing new places ,cultures & interacting with people is again something i love to do .
I would extend invitation to the people across the world to come visit the Northern areas of Pakistan that are bestowed by Nature in all its menifestations.My country suffers from negative propoganda but as a matter of fact its wonderful & the people are very hopitable.
