Italy has a long and complex history, dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Etruscans and the Romans. The Roman Republic and Empire were powerful forces in the Mediterranean world for centuries, shaping the course of Western civilization. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Italy was ruled by a succession of barbarian invasions, Byzantine rule, and Germanic tribes.
During the Middle Ages, Italy was divided into numerous city-states and kingdoms, including Florence, Venice, and Milan. The Renaissance, a period of great cultural and artistic achievement, began in Italy during the 14th century and lasted into the 16th century. In 1861, Italy was united as a nation-state for the first time, with the city of Rome becoming its capital. Since then, Italy has undergone periods of political turmoil and economic growth, and is currently a republic with a parliamentary democracy.
