Introducing the Calendar of Events, Holidays and Historical Civic Dates of Switzerland in 2023!
Switzerland has a long history dating back to the Roman era, but it was during the Middle Ages that the region began to take shape as a distinct political entity. In the late 12th and early 13th centuries, a federation of rural communities and small cities formed, known as the Old Swiss Confederacy. This confederation, made up of cantons, was able to resist the expansion of the Habsburg dynasty and maintained a degree of independence.
In the 16th century, Switzerland experienced religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, which caused a series of wars known as the Wars of Kappel. The conflicts ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which granted freedom of religion and formalized the independence of Switzerland.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Switzerland underwent a process of modernization and urbanization, becoming a center of industry and commerce. In 1848, Switzerland adopted a federal constitution, which established a strong central government and a system of direct democracy.
Switzerland has remained neutral in the major conflicts of the 20th century, but it is a member of the United Nations and has a strong economy and high standard of living. Today, Switzerland is a federation of 26 cantons, each with its own government, and has a stable political system with a federal parliament and a multi-party system.
