1.- Monique, you were born in Australia, What do you like about your hometown in Australia?
I was born in Perth, a city situated in the golden state of Western Australia. I appreciate that my state is home to some of the most beautiful and captivating landscapes in the world, including the red ochre rock formations, mining regions, turquoise waters of the Coral Coast, vibrant dining and shopping precincts in Perth, as well as the beaches and wineries of the South. I like that Western Australia truly has something to offer for everyone, making it a fascinating place to explore, starting with my hometown of Perth.
2.- What are your hobbies? What makes you laugh a lot or gives you joy?
My hobbies include pageantry, collecting art and fashion to name a few. My favourite hobby that gives me a lot of joy is pageantry. I am an award-winning pageant queen, currently serving as a national finalist in the Mrs Galaxy Australia Pageant 2024. With a background in law, I have had a professional career as a family lawyer and hold a Master of Legal Practice from the Australian National University.
Pageantry provides an opportunity for me to utilise the best of my skills and talents to advocate for women, children and those facing adversity. As part of my pageantry I engage in philanthropic endeavours, volunteering and fundraising for various charities including youth mental health charity batyr and Fostering Hope Australia Inc.
3.- International Model, Mrs Galaxy Australia National Finalist 2024 .When did you decide to take your first steps as a model and beauty pageants? What feeling do you have achieving your dreams, your passions and being a recognized influencer woman today?
When I was about 12 years old I was encouraged by my parents to get into modelling. They knew the world that I would be entering into as a young woman and he wanted me to build my confidence. I do think this was a very progressive move by them. The modelling skills I learnt early on have served me well in life.
Since I was a little girl I have been fascinated with pageants. When I was a teenage mother, I was really in awe of the local Galaxy pageant girls. I saw them as these empowered women doing amazing things in their community and fundraising for great causes. Since 2022, I have been able to pursue beauty pageants and I am so proud to have the opportunity to be a Mrs Galaxy Australia national finalist 2024! I feel so excited to be achieving my dreams and passions. I am grateful to be recognised as an influencer woman if it assists someone else on their life journey.
4.- What do you think is the distinctive, unique stamp of Monique in each activity carried out as a beauty queen and model?
I believe the distinctive and unique stamp of Monique is “tenacity”. This I bring to each activity carried out as a pageant queen and model. It’s a trait that has served me well in all my endeavours in life.
5.- What is the main virtue that any woman must have to be an international model?
The main virtue that any woman must have to be an international model is “gratitude”. Being grateful is so much more than just saying thank you. Gratitude changes your perspective of the world and embracing a sense of gratitude can open doors to new projects and allow you to say yes to opportunities.
6.- Are you aware of being an influential woman for thousands of girls who want to be models? How important is it to you to be an idol for many girls and teenagers?
As a pageant queen whom also models, I am aware that I am seen as an influential woman to many girls and especially girls that aspire to be models. Given this responsibility as someone that has proudly overcome a lot of difficulties in my life, it’s important that as a role model I share my story of triumph over adversity as a teenage mother to an empowered woman. This is a testament to the importance of never giving up on your dreams to achieve your goals! Despite the adversities, I am living my best Cinderella life happily married to my husband Maurice, raising my two sons, Isaac (17 years) and Theodore (2 years) and I get to have fun modelling too!
7.- What was your feeling the first time you modeled in front of a video camera? What did you feel the first time at a beauty pageant?
I felt a sense of excitement the first time I modelled in front of a video camera and I had that same feeling the first time I was at a beauty pageant. I am looking forward to experiencing that same feeling again when I compete at the Australia Galaxy Pageant national final to be held in Sydney in May 2024.
8.- What do you think about the power of social media today?
I believe social media can be a powerful resource in a modern world. It has revolutionised the way people connect on a global level and at the heart of the power of social media is “influence”.
9.- How do you like to interact with your followers on social media? What’s your favorite social media?
I like to interact on social media with my followers in an authentic way. My favourite social media platform is Instagram. There you will see that I share snippets from my life and journey to the Mrs Galaxy Australia national final 2024.
10.- What would you advise young people who have talent but do not dare to take the next step? What would you advise parents who do not support their children’s talents?
Every young person has gifts and talents that can make a lasting impact. However, only a minority of people utilise those gifts and talents to live up to their full potential. Talent needs to be nurtured. From my personal experience, I would advise young people who have not taken the next step to combine their gifts and talents with their personal purpose. Because this not only leads to a more fulfilling life, but a significant one.
As for parents who do not support their children’s talents, I would say that as a parent one of the most rewarding experiences has been to support both my children’s gifts and talents. I highly recommend it!
11.- What important lessons have you learned from the world of fashion and beauty pageants?
I have learnt many important lessons from the world of fashion and beauty pageants including that fashion is open to interpretation. Beauty pageants have confirmed for me that beauty is not solely determined by what’s on the outside, but by the depth of character, wisdom and self confidence that comes with age. Most importantly, I have learnt that fashion and beauty pageants can provide an empowering experience. That’s something unique within itself.
12.- Monique, being a model for you has been easy? Were there obstacles? How did you overcome obstacles?
I started modelling over twenty years ago. Throughout my journey there has been obstacles and I have faced individuals who were not supportive of my modelling. This lack of support and encouragement hindered by ability to pursue certain modelling opportunities. To overcome these obstacles, I have learned to embrace and seize modelling opportunities that present themselves to me.
13.- Have you thought about being an actress? Do you like the entertainment industry?
I have a strong interest in the entertainment industry. Interestingly, my son, Theodore (2 years old), has recently been cast in a Stan television series as a younger version of one of the leading actors. This series is set to air in 2025. While I am focused on supporting my son’s acting career, I am always open to exploring any opportunities that may come my way.
14.- Worldwide, women have acquired a greater role even though there are societies where they are still abused. What is your opinion of the role of women in the future in these societies?
Women’s rights are fundamental human rights and as a global citizen we all have a role in upholding these rights. Progress for women’s rights is still needed and especially on a global scale. It is concerning that even though women have acquired a greater role, there are societies where they are still abused. My personal opinion of the role of women in the future in these societies is that they must not lose hope for a world without women’s rights abuses. Going forward, I know it might be challenging and that’s what makes this all the more important!
15.- Monique, what is your motivation and what do you feel grateful for every day?
I always say that my children, Isaac and Theodore are my motivation. Having someone that looks up to you like a child really does inspire and motivate you to be the best version of yourself. I feel so very grateful for my family including my husband, Maurice, Isaac and Theodore.
16.- Monique, Do you like to travel? What countries do you know? What other countries would you like to know and which places do you recommend to visit from Australia?
I absolutely love to travel. As a child I had the nickname “jetsetter kid”! I have travelled all over Australia, Europe, Singapore and America. Besides visiting my hometown of Perth, I would recommend visiting Sydney. It never gets old seeing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Plus, it hosts the Australia Galaxy Pageant national finals!
