1. Tell me about the city where you were born and raised. What do you like about your hometown?

I was born and raised in Heemstede, a charming town in the Netherlands known for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. Heemstede is close to nature, with parks like Groenendaal and the stunning Zuid-Kennemerland National Park nearby. I love how it combines a small-town feel with easy access to larger cities like Haarlem and Amsterdam. It’s also close to the beach in Zandvoort and close to “the Bollenstreek”, where the seasonal flower fields make it a truly special place to call home!

2. What are your hobbies? What makes you laugh a lot or gives you joy?

My hobbies include yoga, reading, traveling, and diving into philosophy and personal development. Yoga helps me find balance, and reading—especially about philosophy—keeps me curious and inspired. Traveling, particularly for work on coaching trips, is a passion of mine because it allows me to help others grow and discover their potential.

What makes me laugh the most? Honestly, I laugh a lot, even when no one else does. I shamelessly laugh at my own jokes, and I find joy in life’s little moments, often seeing humor where others might not. It’s a great way to stay positive!

3. When did you decide to take your first steps as a model and beauty pageant participant?

About 12 years ago, I participated in a beauty pageant for the first time. But life took me in a different direction afterward. Now, 12 years later, I was scouted and thought, “Can I still do this?” Then I told myself, “Ok, why not!” It’s been an exciting journey that challenges me to step out of my comfort zone. I know I still have a lot to work on, but growth always happens outside of comfort, and that motivates me to keep going.

4. What is the distinctive, unique stamp of Maria in each activity as a beauty queen and model?

My unique stamp is authenticity and perseverance. I approach every activity with genuine passion and a desire to inspire others to be the best version of themselves.

I also bring my cultural background—being half Tunisian and half Dutch—into everything I do. I stand for diversity and inclusion, and I’m committed to breaking the taboo surrounding mental health. Both in my personal life and work, I’ve faced challenges with mental health, and I’ve seen firsthand that change is always possible.

I’ve experienced inequality in many forms, and I hope to be a support and example for creating more opportunities for equality, especially for women. I want to show that it’s always possible to rewrite your story—I’m living proof of that.

5. What is the main virtue that any woman must have to be an international model?

Resilience. Being true to yourself and handling challenges with grace is what truly sets you apart.

I also believe that genuineness, authenticity, and vulnerability are key virtues. Real power and strength come from embracing who you are and allowing your true self to shine through. It’s this combination that creates a deep connection with others and makes you unforgettable.

6. How do you feel about being an influential woman for young girls?

It’s both a privilege and a responsibility. I feel honored to inspire young girls to believe in themselves and chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles.

Coming from a background where I didn’t always feel supported, I know how important it is to have someone believe in you. I want to be that source of encouragement for others who may not have the support they need. Knowing I can make a difference in their lives motivates me every day.

7. What did you feel the first time you modeled or participated in a pageant?

The first time—and even now—it was incredibly nerve-wracking but also exciting. I still find it uncomfortable at times, but I challenge myself to do it anyway. It’s a way for me to build my confidence and self-compassion, and it has a ripple effect on other areas of my life, making them easier as well.

It’s a continuous journey of growth, and I’ve learned that practice truly makes progress. Every time I step out of my comfort zone, I feel a little stronger and more empowered.

8. What do you think about the power of social media today?

Social media is incredibly powerful. It connects people globally, provides platforms for voices to be heard, and allows us to inspire and share meaningful messages.

However, it’s sometimes used in negative ways. That’s why I consciously use my platform to offer a counterbalance—a place for positive, inspiring messages and warm encouragement. I aim to uplift others and remind them they’re not alone, sharing content that motivates and supports people in their journeys.

9. How do you like to interact with your followers? What’s your favorite social media?

I enjoy being authentic and open with my followers, sharing insights, and engaging through comments and messages. My favorite platform is Instagram, as it’s perfect for visual storytelling and connecting with people on a deeper level.

I’m also active on Facebook and LinkedIn, especially for professional connections. I love using social media to share, connect, and build relationships, and it’s amazing how it allows me to interact with people from all around the world.

10. Advice for young people and parents about pursuing talents?

To young people: Follow your heart and your dreams. Do what brings you joy, and it will always be meaningful, valuable, and fulfilling. When you pursue what excites you, it will bring purpose to your life.

To parents: Allow your children to choose their own path. Support them where needed and give them the space and freedom to express their creativity. Avoid projecting your own ideas or unmet expectations onto them, and instead encourage them to discover and pursue their true passions.

11. Important lessons from the world of fashion and pageants?

One of the most important lessons is to stay true to yourself—your boundaries, values, and the things you stand for. When you do this, you’ll feel the most secure in who you are. Don’t try to imitate others; be authentic, because that’s what truly sets you apart.

12. Has being a model been easy? Were there obstacles?

It hasn’t been easy. There’s still a certain image that models are expected to conform to, even though that’s changing. I’ve often felt the pressure to fit into a specific mold, and I know many young girls feel the same way, even though they are already beautiful just as they are.

I’ve experienced this pressure myself, but what I would love to see is a shift toward teaching young people to believe in their own power and strength, rather than chasing after a fake ideal. I think education can play a huge role in improving this—helping people understand that true beauty comes from within, and that authenticity is far more powerful than any unrealistic standard.

13. Have you thought about being an actress?

I’ve never seriously thought about becoming an actress, but I do think I’d be quite good at it! I have a knack for creating and telling stories, and deep down, I’m a bit of a comedian. I love bringing humor to situations and making people laugh, so who knows, maybe one day I’ll explore that side of myself more!

14. Your opinion about women’s roles in societies where they are still oppressed?

I’m convinced that it is necessary and needed that women all over the world will continue to rise more and more.

There was a time of goddesses, followed by periods dominated by patriarchy, but I believe we’re entering a time where balance between masculine and feminine energy is essential. Education and awareness are key to empowering women in these societies, helping them claim their rightful place. As more women embrace their power and strength, we will see significant change and progress toward equality.

15. What is your motivation and daily gratitude?

My motivation comes from my purpose to inspire and make a positive impact, and my loved ones.

My mantra, Lokah Samasta sukino bhavantu, reminds me to wish happiness and peace for all beings, and I also practice Ho’oponopono to promote healing and harmony.

I’m grateful every day for the little things—though they’re never really little. Health, family, and everything I’m fortunate to have in my life bring more abundance and blessings. Gratitude keeps my energy at a high frequency, and I believe that’s what attracts even more positivity into my life.

16. Do you like to travel? What countries do you know and recommend?

I absolutely love to travel, both for work and leisure. I’ve been to over 40 countries and have a bucket list goal to visit at least one new country every year. The world is full of so many beautiful places, but I also enjoy returning to magical spots I’ve already explored.

In the Netherlands, I would definitely recommend visiting Haarlem, where I live. It’s a beautiful city where every street tells a story—perfectly balanced, not too crowded and not too quiet, and it’s just a short trip to Amsterdam. Haarlem has a special charm that makes it a must-see!

18. Your final words or tips?

Never deny or underestimate any part of yourself. Every small step counts, and just like seeds, things take time to grow. Try to live as much as possible in the present moment, embracing the journey. Every experience, no matter how small, brings you closer to who you are meant to be. Trust in yourself and the process. Much love!
