1.- Hayley, tell me about the city where you were born and raised. What do you like about your hometown?
I was actually born in Cape Town, South Africa and lived there until I emigrated to Perth, Australia in 2007, where I have settled with my husband and we are raising two beautiful daughters. Both countries and cities have their own beauty and I just feel blessed to be safe and able to provide for my family.
2.- What are your hobbies? what makes you laugh a lot or gives you joy?
I’ve always found that my hobbies and my career choices have blurred into one. Being on stage, dancing, singing and more recently in my life the world of pageantry has really become a safe space for me to enjoy connecting with empowered women and offer me a platform to contribute to my community and give back through some amazing foundations.
3.- What initially inspired you to pursue a career in acting and dancing?
The performing arts was always a safe haven for me, the stage is where evrything just really males sense for me. It was where I was allowed to be my whacky self and embrace my love of entertaining peope and making them smile. As I continued to study the arts I came to realise it was just never something I could live without and I had to make it a part of my life forever.
4.- As a dance teacher and choreographer, what do you find most rewarding about sharing your passion with others?
I love when I can see that people or students are inspired. The best feeling is when a student has been struggling with something and has that lightbulb moment! Watching them grow and progress is all the thanks I could ever need.
5.- Can you share a memorable experience from your journey as a dancer or actress that significantly impacted you?
I have been blessed with so many amazing moments but the stand outs for me; definitely being cast in a lead role in Mamma Mia the musical at the Regal Theatre in Perth and then being on national TV for the rality TV show The Voice here in Australia. These events have been massive moments but any day I get to perform is a great day in my life whatever the size of the stage or evento.
6.- How do you balance your roles as a performer, teacher, and choreographer?
I have to admit as I have got older and now I have to children to look after as well, managing all my hats has become very difficult. My work and performing has definitley had to take a back seat but I still manage to find moments to give me that little injection of joy and keep me going! It’s just about juggling and being a team to make sure we all have our momento in the spotlight.
7.- What motivated you to participate in the Mrs Galaxy Australia National Finalist competition?
I was introduced to the world of pageantry in 2021 when I was looking for something new to challenge me as well as offering me a space to contribute to my community, be a Good role model and have lots off un with like-minded people. After winning two titles I have decided my next big challenge needed to get me out of my comfort zone and Galaxy is that challenge for me.
8.- How has your background in acting and dancing influenced your approach to pageantry?
I definitely think dance and acting has given me the poise and confidence to tackle the pageant world head on. My ability to carry myself on the catwalk and speak to crowds are Paramount tolos to be successful in the pageant world. As a performer I am also a team player and I love the social aspecto of pageantry and the beautiful network I have built.
9.- What do you hope to achieve through your participation in the Mrs Galaxy Australia National Finalist competition?
The ultimate outcome would be to win the national pageant in Sydney and be able to travel to the USA to represent my country. I would also be so excited to show my daughters that anything they set their mind to is posible and even in adversity you can succeed. I also advocate for a mental health plataform and would love to continue to spread the Word of the batyr foundation and the great work they do supporting youth mental health.
10.- What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have you overcome them?
In this kind of career there is more adversity than success on any given day. Every audition or appearance offers another opportunity for a knock back but what it has given me is resilience and strength to have faith in myself and my abilities. I have had many injuries, some hard days with my mental health but at the core of it I am stronger and braver than ever.
11.- Can you discuss a project or performance that you’re particularly proud of?
I honestly have so many things I have been part of but I will say I was particularly proud of running my first ever performing arts festival and competition in 2023 that ran for a whole week and saw over 2000 patrons come through the door. A humbling moment to remember.
12.- How do you stay creatively inspired in your work as both an actress and dancer?
It’s not hard to be inspired when you are surrounded by passionate people who drive what you do. I draw my inspiration from my past, present as well as my friends, family and students and it is like oxygen for my creativity.
13.- What advice would you give to aspiring performers who are just starting their journey?
I would simply say: make sure this is what you really want because it won’t be easy but you will never be more fulfilled than when you are chasing your dreams.
14.- How do you incorporate elements of Australian culture or identity into your performances?
I always think anything we put on here in Perth or Australia has a particular flavour to it. We can’t help but be different here and I truly love diving into the history of what built this country and explore that through my choreography. There have obviously been dark chapters which can’t be forgotten but lots to also celebrate; al lof these moments deserve a spotlight.
15.- What do you believe sets you apart as a performer and competitor in the Mrs Galaxy Australia National Finalist competition?
I Will start by saying I am no more deserving of the title than any of my fellow sash sisters but I do feel I bring an authenticity and freshness to the pageant pack. I am not afraid to be myself and embrace all the parts of me. I think my ability to be confident in my decisions and delivery coupled with my people skills will make me a formidable candidate ….(this feels like a job interview now ha ha ha ha).
16.- How do you prepare mentally and physically for competitions and performances?
I have to really do a loto f ‘self-talk’. Visualisation and goal setting is key, I like to not over rehearse and just try to remind myself its just another day I get to do what I love.
17.- Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals within the entertainment industry and beyond?
I would obviously love to become a household name but I also know that is reserved for a very small percentage of the world. I have decided that I would just like to be remembered for my talent from the people I love who are always supporting my ventures. I think I have already been successful in so many ways and I know, if anything, I am famous in the eyes of my daughters who will carry my name into the future.
