1.- Gabriëlle, you have a versatile career as a singer, model, and makeup artist. How do you balance these different roles, and how do they influence each other?
To be honest.. ever since I was a little girl, I have always been an incredibly creative spirit, I always have a passion for different creative career areas.
When I was a young girl I only had one dream, I wanted to become a famous singer no matter what. Somewhere around the age of 7, I kept my own diary of how I thought I would become famous and I always stood in front of the mirror singing. I enjoyed talent shows on TV and I enjoyed songs from famous singers with powerhouses of voices. I’ve started writing my own songs at a very young age. When I got older I also did studio recordings and recorded a couple of video clips… but due to my high demands on myself it never turned out to be what I hoped for… it was never good enough, I’m a big perfectionist. I performed for a while in my twenties, which I thought was really cool to do… I love the stage! But when I became a mom I didn’t have much time for it… I still love singing, but it’s on the back burner for now.
I no longer have the dream of becoming famous, but I would still like to perform in the future… I really miss that. Music for me. is the greatest emotional outlet, it’s so powerful!
I also did modeling for a couple of years, photoshoots, being the face of a high end shoe brand and I walked as a model on runaways but during my switch to a career as a make-up artist, the make up profession became my main focus, next to that I will also soon be launching my own jewelry line ‘’Enjami’’.
2.- You’ve been in the beauty industry since 2010. How has your approach to makeup and styling evolved over the years, and what have been the most significant changes you’ve observed in the industry?
In the beauty and fashion profession, trends are constantly changing, it is important to keep up with this and continue to learn about the latest trends in the make-up and fashion industry. By occasionally taking further training and also following online tutorials from the big make up guru’s, I stay up to date. and I continue to grow and with my techniques.
3.- In 2022, you were selected as a Pro Creator for M·A·C Cosmetics U.S.A. Could you share what this experience was like and what you learned from collaborating with such a prestigious brand?I
Yes.. that was really an amazing experience! I was allowed to make creations for M-A-C Pro every month for a year according to the latest trends. This really challenged my make-up skills because sometimes these trends were also new for me, so it was really stepping out of my comfort zone, super cool! When I first started as a make-up artist, I never dreamed that this would ever happen for such a big world famous brand! I received lots of amazing products during that time and I’ve learned so much! I also appeared in the M-A-C pro international newsletter and on their Instagram, It really was such a dream come true!
4.- Your work covers a broad range of services, from makeup to styling and even portrait photography. What drives your passion for creativity, and how do you stay inspired to keep innovating in your field?
Creativity flows in my bloodstream.. it’s a part of me I’ve always been creative.
By continuing to challenge myself, I continue to innovate the most. Sometimes I suddenly have inspiration crossing my mind, for example a new look or new workshop concept… The inspiration always keeps flowing within me.
5.- As a true all-rounder in the beauty and fashion industry, what challenges do you face in meeting the diverse needs of your clients, and how do you ensure that each one leaves satisfied and glowing?
That always remains a challenge even after +10 years as a make-up artist, it can still make me nervous when a client arrives for the first time.. But all my customers walk out with a smile and are satisfied. I think my strength lies in the fact that I have a calm and compassionate character. When clients sit in my make-up chair, they really have a luxurious experience for themself, we have conversations, the reason whyI’m calling myself a therapist also sometimes 😉 some clients tell me a lot, but its always save with me. We always make a laugh and I love to empower my clients.
6.- You’ve been transforming faces with love and passion for over a decade. What do you believe is the key to building a long-lasting career in the beauty industry?
In my case, social media has brought me the most, when I started making creations on my own face a few years ago… from that moment on I started getting a lot of bookings from all over the country and collaborations with make-up brands. That was the moment I registered my name as a business, an absolute highlight for me that I am still very proud of.
To be really honest… It remains a very difficult world to make your name big in because there are many many mua’s in this era, but my tip to new make-up artists in the profession would be… don’t give up! Practice a lot, immerse yourself in new trends, promote yourself by really showing what you can do.. Don’t hold on to the books.. do you!! You really have to feel what you’re doing, have a big passion for it and have your own unique techniques.
7.- Social media plays a significant role in your work, especially during your time as a Pro Creator for M·A·C Cosmetics. How do you use these platforms to connect with your audience and showcase your skills?
I make creations on my own face every now and then on my Instagram page. Also I support other creative souls on social media and I share backstage content and photo and video shoot results on my instagram stories.
8.- What are some of the most memorable projects or clients you’ve worked with, and how have they shaped your journey as a makeup artist and stylist?
I think working on the Protails ‘’born to be free’’ Music video from artists: The Prophet, Ran-D and Le Prince for me still was one of the biggest highlights. For this video clip I had the honor of taking care of the complete cast styling and also taking care of the make-up and beard prostheses. It was a very busy but rewarding job, with a very nice enthusiastic team, great vibes and also delicious food on set.
What shaped my journey as a makeup artist from this project was: I have seen that with a great team you have the energy to handle so much more than you think. Positivity is always the key and a positive team energy is super important.
9.- Makeup trends are constantly evolving. How do you keep up with the latest trends, and how do you decide which ones to incorporate into your work?
I am mainly inspired by the bigger names of make-up artists on social media. They often identify the latest trends, if I find them interesting I always try them out and sometimes take further skills training so that I can also include them in my work and teach them to customers during workshops that I give.
10.- You offer makeup workshops and personalized advice. What do you find most rewarding about teaching others, and how do you tailor your workshops to meet individual needs?
What I like most about giving make-up workshops is the enthusiasm of people in my classes. It’s always fun and people always get useful tips for themselves, which makes me feel extremely grateful.
To tailor the needs of the customers, I sometimes publish a poll on Instagram where people can indicate what their make-up training wishes are. Also clients automatically approach me with their wishes via my website.
11.- Your portfolio includes a wide range of looks and styles. How do you approach the creative process when working on a new project, and where do you draw inspiration from?
I often work with mood boards on projects, and I stick to the client’s wishes. When I have more free rein, I let myself be inspired by the subject of the project and by the face in front of me… I always manage to achieve something beautiful and appropriate that fits the image.
12.- As someone who is very precise and detail-oriented, how do you maintain a balance between perfectionism and creativity in your work?
I sometimes have to let go of my perfectionism to achieve the best results. I can often go ahead and see things that the customer doesn’t see, which is unnecessary. Good is good enough, that’s one big thing I’ve learned.
13.- The beauty and fashion industry can be highly competitive. What strategies have you used to stand out and establish yourself as a sought-after makeup artist and stylist?
I think for me it really started with sharing creations on my own face on social media, this honestly remains the thing that has brought me the most in my career.
14.- You also work as a stylist on set. How does your experience in makeup influence your approach to styling, and how do you ensure that the overall look is cohesive?
I always stay updated on the latest make up and fashion trends. I always receive the set card in advance, with the faces participating on set and the theme of the video. I stick to the customer’s wishes and add my own twist so that it becomes a beautiful, coherent combination of styling and make-up. It is best to focus on one of these tasks at a time, I took on the challenge of doing both once, which was a lot but absolutely a wonderful experience. In the future projects I only focus on one of these jobs on set no combination anymore haha.
15.- What do you think are the most important qualities for a successful makeup artist, and how do you embody these in your work?
My number one tip… Feel what you are doing, you can have the best and most expensive education, but if you have no sense of creativity you will never get there. It’s more important to show your skills to the world… make creations, share them on your socials and keep on upgrading your skills by practicing.
16.- As a model yourself, how does your experience in front of the camera influence your work behind the scenes as a makeup artist and stylist?
I don’t work as a model anymore, but I use past experience to give tips, for example, if models in projects where I work are a bit unsure about posing in front of the camera. I am happy that with my experience I can help them on their way and they feel more confident in their pictures.
17.- You’ve mentioned that you’re only satisfied when your client is radiant. What do you believe are the essential elements of a successful makeup session?
It is very essential to have good contact with your customer, as well as good skincare for the client.. always try to make the client feel comfortable and end up with a good fixation so that the makeup lasts all day!
18.- Being based in Den Bosch and working across the country, how does the local culture and fashion scene influence your work, and how do you adapt to different regional styles?
You will be surprised how often people have the same wishes. Actually, it’s not too bad with regional styles here, it’s mainly working with many different types of faces, but I always find that a nice challenge.
19.- Your ability to provide a wide range of services is impressive. How do you manage your schedule to accommodate the different demands of your clients and projects?
Thank you! I’m a good planner, so I have no problem with this. However, it sometimes happens that I am too busy to take on all the job offers, so I outsource them to my talented sister who is also a make-up artist or to a fellow make-up artist.
20.- As someone who has achieved so much in the beauty industry, what advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists who are just starting out?
Practice, practice, practice… You learn the most by doing and by working with many different faces and skin types. Also challenge yourself by recreating looks that seem complicated to you and taking photos of them to improve your skills.
21.- The beauty industry is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about confidence. How do you use makeup to help your clients feel more confident and empowered?
I always bring out the most beautiful features of my clients during my make-up session… I highlight these which always empowers them.
When I see a face… I already have a total make-up and brow picture in my head.
22.- Your passion for makeup and styling is clear. What are your future goals in this industry, and are there any new areas you’d like to explore?
It’s still a big dream for me to provide makeup for a major international artist and to collaborate with even more brands worldwide. so that I can show many more creations, that is the part that I love the most and what I can be most creative with.
I would also love to be able to provide Special effects make-up for a big movie with famous actors.
23.- Given your diverse skill set, what has been your most challenging project to date, and how did you overcome the obstacles you faced?
Bridal make-up always remains the biggest challenge for me. I enjoy it, but there is a lot of pressure on you every time, you really can’t screw it up because people are going to have the day of their lives.
By doing a trial session with the bride before the wedding, you relieve yourself of a lot of this stress and everyone knows where they stand that day.
24.- As a creative professional, how do you handle feedback and criticism, and how do you use it to improve your craft?
To be honest, I don’t get much criticism. Once in a while it happened and it was purely constructive, for example there is a little more on a customer’s face than she would have liked… You can always adjust this, it’s totally fixable and when you fix it the customer feels heard and you put that smile on the customer’s face again. That gives satisfaction.
25.- Finally, what legacy do you hope to leave in the beauty and fashion industry, and how do you want to be remembered by your clients and peers?
I hope I will be remembered as a make-up artist who always stood by her clients and that I can inspire other makeup artists with my creations…
Also as a woman who worked hard to fight for her name in this tough business.
