1.- Malena, thank you so much for accepting our invitation. As a native of Spain, what have you always loved about the city where you grew up? What are the lifelong pastimes that Malena still enjoys? What makes you smile or brings you great joy?
What I’ve always loved about my city, which is Madrid, I’d say, is that it’s a very welcoming, very cosmopolitan city; everyone who comes to Madrid is well received and embraced. In fact, there’s a big community from your homeland, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Colombian,
and, well, we all blend together, because I think deep down we are all… I consider myself very Latina. I work a lot in Colombia, in Santo Domingo, and I’d love to work in Peru; in fact, I’ve come close to going several times. And Madrid, besides being such a beautiful city, welcomes everyone; it’s very warm and hospitable.
As for pastimes, I’d say I love my animals and my family, those are my hobbies, along with going to the gym and playing sports, tennis, I’m very sporty, and my work, which I’m passionate about and love, and contact with the public. I really like live shows because you can see how people enjoy themselves.
What makes me happy is always a child’s smile, or a surprise, seeing something that moves me, people doing a good deed, that brings a smile to my face.
2.- International artist, actress: how did Malena take her first steps in the world of acting and the entertainment industry?
I’m an actress and a singer, and I’ve been in the world of show business since I was six years old, when I told my mother I wanted to be an artist, which was unthinkable in my house, because we were a humble family.
I was the little girl and I loved it so much that one day I stood at the door of a ballet school and they let me in, and I went for free for many years.
That’s how I started my career.
I always had love and respect for the artistic world and, well, when I was 11 there was a theater company where I lived, in my neighborhood, and they started taking me along, because I also went to talk to them myself.
I was always clear that I was going to be an artist and that I was going to be great, because everything I set my mind to, I want to do well. And I stayed with them for many years, I was the girl of the company, I learned a lot, and from there on I kept studying, of course, at school, at high school, and then I started working and haven’t stopped since.
3.- What kinds of characters do you like to play? Do you think an actress should be 360?
I like playing all kinds of characters, and what I like most are challenges, that is, characters that have nothing to do with me.
I once even played an ugly girl and they put a nose on me, so I love challenges.
I’ve done horror movies, I’ve done everything. So the more complicated it is, the more I like having to work hard at it and get it done.
And, well, as an actress I have a lot of range. I’ve done a lot of comedy, but I also really like drama.

4.- Singer: when did Malena realize she had this talent, and when did you decide to make it part of your life and develop it professionally?
A singer since I started studying singing, very young, as soon as I could afford it, and I recorded my first album at 19, with the record label Zafiro, which no longer exists. And since then, I haven’t stopped singing.
I began singing a different kind of music, more flamenco, and now what I do is more pop dance or pop rock. Though I sing everything, because I also do operas, I do lots of things. I’m a soprano, although today I have a bit of a cold, because it’s very cold here in Madrid.
5.- Which musical genre do you like performing most? Would you like to venture into another genre and experiment with new styles?
All of them, all of them, because I might do zarzuela, or opera, or a lot of festivals with music from the 2000s, the 80s, the 90s. Everything.
I think an artist has to be well-rounded, and I’m very well-rounded in that respect. I’ve devoted myself to studying quite a lot.
It’s true that I’ve also done a lot of musicals, I did the musical Gris, Los Corsarios… so musicals are also a genre I really like, because since I’m a dancer, you sing, you dance, you act… I love that.
6.- Do you agree with the idea that musicians are “communicators of the heart”? Do you think new musical genres create value for society?
I’d say yes, because in our lives a song has always meant something: a love, someone we’ve met, a moment with your family. There’s always a song that’s special, so when people tell me they fell in love with one of my songs, for me that’s a huge high, you know? Because for people to fall in love to a song of mine, or sing it with their children, they tell me my daughters sing your songs, that’s the most beautiful thing anyone can say to you.
As for new music, there are artists I like a lot and others I don’t, because I think music has reached a point where anyone is a singer now, and it isn’t like that, it shouldn’t be like that, right? You have to study a lot and have
a track record, and there are artists I listen to who can’t even pronounce their words, so a song I can’t understand may be very pretty, but then those lyrics are sometimes far too jokey, you know? They say things that may even be against women and so on, and I don’t like that. I believe music has to be to bring happiness, not to put out other kinds of messages and judgments.

7.- How does it feel to do what you love, what you’re passionate about? Is it easy?
No, it’s not easy. You have to prepare a lot.
Look, right now, for example, I have a cold and I’ve been at home for a few days because I have a concert, and I can sing with a cold because I’ve studied a lot and I know how to manage my voice, but this profession requires taking very good care of yourself, always staying up to date with the music that comes out and doing everything very well, being very professional.
8.- Malena, have you faced obstacles in doing what you love? How did you overcome them?
Many, so many, because first of all I’m a woman, and always, even though we say we’re very modern, when a woman starts to stand out, they start saying, what could she have done, and so on. In my case, it has been through a huge amount of work and effort, and I came from a very humble family, so nobody made it easy for me.
It’s been very hard, knocking on many doors and having to prove 20 times more than everyone else, but, well, since I’m very stubborn, I kept on my path.
And how did I overcome them?
With effort and dedication. It’s the only way, by working very hard.
9.- Malena, are you aware that as your career grows, you are becoming an influencer and an opinion leader a little more each day? How do you handle that? How do you like to interact with the followers who join you? What is your favorite social network?
Of course, Instagram, because, the truth is, I have it linked to Facebook as well. Instagram and Facebook.
Twitter I only manage because it takes up a lot of my time, and of course, in the end we become influencers.
Artists have to be there, it’s the best tool for our work.

10.- Which habits are important to adopt in order to keep an artistic career continually growing?
The important habits for me are perseverance and facing things the right way, and getting up every day with a sense of excitement.
Because I know that you want to go to a concert and do it better, or you want to go to a shoot and this film is another challenge. I’m an artist because for me it’s always a different job. I couldn’t be in an office every day like my sister.
I need to feel more active and more alive.
11.- Malena, as an artist, what are the next steps you want to take: dreams, projects, wishes? Which artist, actor or dancer would you like to interact with or share scenes with?
I always have dreams. As I told you before, well, look, I have a concert next week in Granada, where three or four singers will perform, and then the following week I travel somewhere else, where I also give another concert. On top of that, I’m waiting on a project they’ve proposed to me, which would be the project of my life, to be turned into a film and a docuseries. I’m writing the script myself because I like writing.
I always have millions of projects, honestly.
Which artist would I like to perform with?
There are many, many that I love. Well, there are lots of Mexican artists too, because I also travel to Mexico a lot: I love Alejandro Fernández, Luis Miguel, and among women, well, Barbra Streisand has a fabulous voice, I think.
There are many, many international artists I would love to work with.
12.- Have you already ventured into the world of TV?
Here in my country I’m a celebrity. I’ve done reality shows, I’ve hosted on networks, and I’m also a TV presenter on Telemadrid. Now they’re also proposing that I host an international show.
I’ve been interviewed because, well, for the past two months I haven’t stopped appearing on television, since a colleague passed away and, well, I’ve been on a lot. I go on almost every talk show; here I’m a celebrity.
So, television is my medium; I was also discovered on television, singing on several shows: Mañanas eran Estrellas, El Trampolín, El Supertrampolín, I won them all, they were a bit like Operación Triunfo from years ago, and from then on, I haven’t stopped being a celebrity and singing.

13.- How did you feel the first time you stood in front of a still camera and a video camera? Have you always been outgoing?
Well, the truth is that I’ve always been very outgoing. I’ve done all the magazine covers too, which is why I’m such a celebrity, because I’ve worked for Hugh Hefner. I worked at the Playboy Mansion, I was the first presenter to host there, I did several covers in the United States, and in Spain too.
I’ve done all the prettiest and sexiest covers there have ever been in Spain. I’ve done Interviu, I think eight times, Hablan, well, all the magazines.
So, the first time I posed, yes, I was embarrassed because I was wearing very little and it was on a beach and I was very young, but then I got over it and had no problem at all. The one who suffered the most was my mother, who didn’t like seeing me in magazines with so little on at all, but, well, she had to get used to it.
14.- Malena, what do you think about the power that social networks and new technologies have?
Now, whether we like it or not, we have to be there on social media, because the truth is that they rule and many people from all over see it, so I’m totally in favor.
What I’m not in favor of is anyone being able to criticize or insult you; I hope someday a law comes out that bans all of that. I get few insults because people like me, but I know of colleagues who get told horrible things.
15.- What would you say to parents who don’t support their children’s talent? And what advice would you give to young people who have talent and ability but don’t dare take the next step?
Well, I’d tell them to study first, and if they truly love it and it’s their calling, because this is a calling, it’s like being a doctor, in fact I wanted to be a doctor and I started studying for it, then let them develop it, because it’s a very beautiful profession, and
if they’re good, let them do it.
And to those who want to do it, the young people, I’d say go for it and study, because you have to study a lot.

16.- What lesson does this whole experience, as both an actress and a singer, teach you every day?
It has taught me that we are very sensitive people, I’m very sensitive, and that I like making others happy. That’s what I take away from my profession.
17.- What is your view on the empowerment of women in recent years, as they reach top positions all over the world? How can this situation be improved?
Look, I have a song that I released with another woman who is trans, called Empoderadas. I believe women should be on the same level as men, because besides, men are worth a lot, but so are we, because behind every great man there is always a great woman. And then, we women can do five things at once.
When I go into a reality show, my fans tell me, but how can you do 20 things at once? We can. Maybe a man does three, well, and we can do 20, very well, so it’s great that they’re finally giving us our place, because women aren’t only good for taking care of a man and children; we also have our own professional development.
And on top of that, salaries should be the same for women as for men. There shouldn’t be any difference there, and there’s still a lot of fighting to do on that front.
18.- Malena, what motivates you and why do you feel grateful every day?
What motivates me is having a family as wonderful as mine. Well, my mom is no longer with us. I have my dad, who is very elderly, and I take great care of him, and brothers and a sister whom I adore. And every day I thank God for being here, for being well every day.
19.- Do you like to travel? Which countries would you like to visit, and which places do you recommend visiting in Spain, our native country?
I’ve spent my whole life traveling; I know all of the United States, I know Peru well, I know Colombia, I know Germany; I’ve spent half my life, and whatever I have left, doing it because I love it, I love traveling. I’m not married, I’ve had my partners, and the first thing I’ve always told them is, I like to travel, so if you’re not going to like traveling, you’re not my partner.
And, well, there are still many places I want to discover, I’d like to discover… In Peru I know the capital, but there are many other places I don’t know.
I don’t know Bali, I don’t know China, I don’t know Japan, I’d like to see them.

20.- How about we play a little ping pong? I’ll say a few words and you tell me the first thing that comes to mind, okay?
Marriage.
I’ve never been married; I believe in marriage, but it hasn’t worked out because of my work, because of circumstances; I hope to be able to marry someday. So far I’ve had partners, but yes, I believe in marriage. I also believe in marriage when you’re more mature; I think it works better than when you marry at 20 and everybody gets divorced.
Abortion
It depends, it depends on the circumstances. I think a woman is free to decide whether or not to have an abortion, because that’s where freedom lies, as long as it’s not a whim, and of course if it’s because of a rape or because the baby is going to be born in poor condition, then I’m totally in favor of abortion, or if the woman doesn’t want it, because we also have the right to decide what we want.
The best movie
I find Pretty Woman very sweet.
Pretty Woman is one of my favorites; I must have seen it a hundred thousand times and I watch it again. I also really like mafia movies. The Godfather, for example; I’ve seen the trilogy so many times.
The worst movie
Any one with a bad script. I’ve seen a few, I won’t say which, but ugh, they have really bad scripts.
Dancing
Always, dance is always in my life.
Singing
Always too.
Politics
Well, look, it’s a subject I now refuse even to talk about, because I don’t know what’s going on right now, but there are no good leaders. I think we lack people with charisma, that’s what I think is missing.
My favorite food
I’m not saying this because you’re Peruvian, but I love sushi and ceviche. And I’ve also had some of the best sushi there in your capital.
My character
Strong, I have a strong character, and I like people who know what they want.
Percentage of craziness
My hit song was LOCA (Crazy), and you have to be a little crazy in life to love life, because otherwise it would be very boring. So, I think my percentage of craziness is medium.
Love, the great love
I’ve had several very important loves in my life, in fact, that’s why I’ve been going on television lately. One of them passed away, he was an artist, a comedian, and I wrote a song for him that will come out a long time from now.
Well, life has taken from me people I loved, but it was so beautiful and I loved so much and so intensely that it has been very, very worth it; I believe in love.
