In this exclusive Perumira interview, we unveil the inspiring journey of Shyreen Gerrits, a woman who proudly represents her Limburg roots and radiates beauty and strength to the world.
1. – Shyreen, tell me about the city where you were born and raised. What do you like about your hometown?
I was born and raised in the village of Venray. Unfortunately, Venray is not a city. What I like so much about my village is that we are too big to be a village but too small to be a city. When there are events in Venray, it really attracts people from the surrounding area. For example, a carnival. People come from all corners.
2.- What are your hobbies? What makes you laugh or gives you pleasure?
My hobbies are singing, and fitness gives me joy. I also care a lot about my friends, with whom I regularly have a drink for the fun of it. Especially the people I know in everyday life always know how to make me laugh, and of course, it’s the same the other way around. It’s a bond that you create.
3.- International Model, Finalist of Miss Teen of Limburg 2025. When did you decide to take your first steps as a model and beauty pageant? How do you feel about achieving your dreams, your passions and being a recognized influencer woman today?
My dream all started when I wanted to sign up with a modeling agency. When I wanted to register, they also asked if I wanted to participate in these competitions. I really wanted to, but in this world, there are so many beautiful women, and it felt like there was no chance for me. Later, after doing some research, I found out that you make lifelong friendships and become more confident in yourself. If I achieve my dreams, I would feel fulfilled, especially if you become a recognized female influencer. More things come your way than you expect. The outside world is harsh and expects you to have everything in order
4.- What do you think is Shyreen’s distinctive, unique stamp in every activity you do as a beauty queen and model?
First of all, I found this question very difficult. Every being that walks on Earth is unique. What I think is really important is being yourself, and by that, I also mean embracing yourself as you are. Often, the positive aspects are highlighted, but also look at your negative traits because all the choices you have made shape who you are.
5.- What is the most important virtue that every woman must have to be an international model?
There are many examples of virtues. Every virtue is important. If I had to choose a few that I believe are particularly good, I would definitely choose kindness. I’m not just talking about a smile here, but also helping others, even in small things. Empathy is also important to me—the ability to understand and feel the emotions and experiences of others. Honesty and respect are also on my list. We always say that with honesty, you get the farthest. Respect speaks for itself: treat others the way you want to be treated and take their opinions and feelings seriously. If I could add two more, responsibility and courage should not be left out. Fulfilling your obligations and taking responsibility for your actions is a must. Facing challenges even when you’re scared makes you a powerful woman.
6.- Are you aware that you are an influential woman for thousands of girls who want to become models? How important is it for you to be an idol for many girls and teenagers?
Yes, definitely. I’ve been a big example for my family my whole life. I am the oldest in the family, and with that comes a lot of responsibility. I also have a role at work where I am a role model for many people. I appreciate it when people take my advice, but they don’t have to think I’m important, and I don’t mind that at all. I am, just like every other person, the same as they are—neither less nor more. I don’t find that important at all.
7.- What was your feeling the first time you modeled in front of a video camera? What did you feel the first time at a beauty pageant?
Before I participated in the Miss Beauty Limburg competition, I had done photoshoots before. The first time in front of a camera was uncomfortable because I was inexperienced and unaware. After doing several shoots, it became normal and was just part of my daily life. When I signed up for this competition, I was really excited, but at the same time, I found it very nerve-wracking. I didn’t know what to expect because this was the first time I was participating in a contest
8.- What do you think of the power of social media today?
Social media is great for sharing your photos and videos with your loved ones through various platforms. However, social media also has a less pleasant side. Some images you find online can often be misleading and make it seem like someone else’s life is better than yours. Nothing could be further from the truth. People want to show that they’re doing okay, even though that might not always be the case, and that’s perfectly fine. As long as someone wants to post something on social platforms, it should be okay without judgment.
9.- How do you like to interact with your followers on social media? What is your favorite social media?
Normally, I’m not someone who spends every hour or part of the day on social media. Usually, when I post something, I do it because it’s something I find important and enjoyable. It wouldn’t be okay for me to post things I don’t like. People follow me for who I am, and I want to keep it that way. I also have friends and colleagues among my followers, and they sometimes get an extra highlight to show that they are important. If I had to choose a favorite, it would definitely be Instagram.
10.- What advice would you give to young people who have talent but do not dare to take the next step? What advice would you give to parents who do not support their children’s talents?
Make yourself known. At first, I never understood when people asked me, ‘Shyreen, why don’t you sing songs on TikTok? You really have a beautiful voice.’ When it comes to making yourself known, you don’t have to start big. I started by asking friends and acquaintances, and during my elementary and high school years, I did performances, standing there with all my courage. I also advise talking to your loved ones—people who genuinely want to listen to your feelings and what you truly want, not for financial gain. For parents, I would advise listening to what your child has to say. I can’t imagine any parent who doesn’t want their child to live the life they want. Parents naturally have a very different view of the world than children, so let your children really choose what they are good at, regardless of effort and finances.
11.- What important lessons have you learned from the fashion world and beauty pageants?
What I have learned during this Miss Beauty Limburg journey is that you need to clearly know what you need to do. For example, asking questions to an organization that have already been answered, or when everything is neatly organized in a document, is of course a no-go and unprofessional. We receive a lot of lessons that focus on what it takes to be a true miss. I have never walked a catwalk before, and I’m being taught how to do it properly.
12.- Was it easy for Shyreen to be a model? Were there any obstacles? How did you overcome that?
When we look at the real modeling world, where models walk the catwalk and look ahead, unfortunately, I am too short. Since my height was the only obstacle, I was really upset about it at first. Fortunately, we live in a modern world where they no longer focus on height.
13.- Have you thought about becoming an actress? Do you like the entertainment industry?
Of course, I have already mentioned in this interview that I have turned singing into a passion, and the same goes for acting. Acting and singing are two things I truly enjoy doing. Last year, I participated in an international online casting for Disney. Unfortunately, I wasn’t chosen, but it was a great experience to be a part of
14.- Worldwide, women have taken on a greater role, even though there are societies where they are still abused. What is your opinion about the role of women in the future in these societies?
It breaks my heart to know that women are still being abused. Many people have no idea what a woman goes through. A long time ago, women were taken care of. Nowadays, I admire women who are independent and can support themselves. I believe more attention should be given to such powerful women.
15.- Shyreen, what is your motivation and what are you grateful for every day?
In my life, I have known many people who have fought against cancer and had no chance of overcoming it, and unfortunately, they didn’t make it and passed away. We, as people, should be grateful that we wake up every day and can fulfill our daily needs.
A piece of motivation I want to share with you is to do what your heart desires and live your life the way you want to. Before you know it, that time may no longer be there. Just be you and do you.
16.- Shyreen, Do you like to travel? Which countries do you know? Which other countries would you like to get to know and which places do you recommend visiting from your own country?
I highly recommend visiting the ’’ 3 landen punt ’’. It has a beautiful view, and you are connected to three different countries at the same time. How cool is that?!
Valkenburg also has a very beautiful view, which we usually don’t get to see across the entire country. I toured there and enjoyed the view, definitely a must-see.
This year, I visited Rotterdam and took a trip to the Euromast. We went up with the elevator and saw a stunning view
