“I love speaking in public and promoting my country. I’m very happy to be able to exchange knowledge with others. It’s great that people from all over the world can get to know more about Poland – an incredible country that has been developing very quickly in recent years”

I speak 4 languages, and I want my knowledge to serve more people. I want this work to have a common, social use – so I have to put this knowledge to use and not keep it only for myself.

In Poland we use Facebook a lot, mostly to talk with friends, share photos, look at interesting events and create themed groups. In my country the second most popular social network is Instagram. There we share photos with friends, edit pictures with filters, and promote a brand or a hobby

***********************************************************

The great virtue of a teacher, an educator, an expert and a wise person is their enthusiasm for life and their constant joy in learning a little more every day. Enjoying new knowledge, and in our times doing so with the help of the internet and information technology, is a dream come true for those of us who see in our neighbors, in our young people, an opportunity to bring what we have learned closer and share it with them.

Our guest is a young professional Cultural Animator with an important track record in event organization and tourism. She also works in marketing and in web development using programming languages, and she is tireless in her pursuit of more and more knowledge.

It is an honor to introduce our last guest of 2017, who comes from Poland and now lives in Spain: Beata Aleksiejuk, creator of the educational language channel Beata Aleksiejuk Language Channel, where those of us who speak Spanish, Russian or English can learn Polish quickly and easily, thanks to her training in pedagogy and psychology. On all of her social media you will find proficiency tests for every lesson she gives.

To this impressive résumé, Beata adds her great passion for travel, which she will be sharing very soon with all her followers.

We invite you to meet an admirable professional and teacher:

Beata Aleksiejuk

1.- Beata, welcome to PMD. You are originally from the Województwo Podlaskie in Poland and currently live in Valencia, Spain. How has Valencia welcomed you? What do you like most about this community and about the beauty of Podlaskie, your hometown? Are there differences in lifestyle? What do Spain and Poland have in common culturally?

When I moved to Spain, I first lived for a year in Madrid, so I had time to get used to the Spanish way of life. I have always been fascinated by Spanish culture, and living there was my dream. Every Spanish community has something different and incredible, and every Spanish city has its own good and unique things. In Valencia, I really like the location. I always wanted to live in a Mediterranean climate, in a big city close to the sea and the beach. I moved to Valencia in July, in the summer season. The city was full of people and happiness. I am also passionate about tourism, and there is a lot to see here. In Valencia I love beautiful places such as the promenade near the beach and the port, the City of Arts and Sciences, the modern buildings, the parks (for example Parque de Río Largo, with its lovely bridges and nature), and the old town. I also like to travel to cities and towns in the Valencian Community. I have visited places like Port Saplaya – the little Venice of Valencia, Castellón de la Plana, Cullera and Dénia.

In Poland, I was born in the Województwo Podlaskie. Podlaskie is a region with a lot of nature – it is greener than the rest of Poland. We call it Zielone Płuca Polski (Green Lungs of Poland). We have lowlands and meadows full of flowers and grain. I remember summers in the Podlasie region when I was little: walks along country roads, listening to the songs of birds and crickets, watching sunsets in the open air. Calm and reflection, natural spaces without crowds – that is what locals and tourists love here. Podlasie is well known for having the oldest forest in Europe – Puszcza Białowieska – as well as the Polish bison – Zubr, the lakes in Augustów, and Biebrza National Park – nature all around the Biebrza River. Białystok is the largest city in the Podlasie region. I studied at the university there. In Białystok I love Branicki Palace, which is also called the Versailles of the North, Rynek Kościuszki, a beautiful square, the architecture of the churches, and Planty Park.

There are many differences in lifestyle between Poles and Spaniards. Poles are more reserved with people they don’t know. We share our emotions only with the people closest to us – family and friends. We go out less to cafés and restaurants – we often invite friends to our home to talk, eat and watch movies. We are crazy about work – we never stop – we try to work as many hours and days as possible. In Poland we have fewer months of good weather, so we spend more time at home or in other buildings. Poles worry more about what others think. I also think Poles travel less than Spaniards. Spaniards are happier than we are – we worry about everything and talk a lot with our friends about our problems. In Spain there are more days off work, and in Poland we start work earlier and work 8 hours without a long break – a siesta.

What unites Spain and Poland is European culture, which shapes our lives toward a modern style, close to technology. Spain is not a very different country. Many countries now share the same culture. There is a lot of influence from the media and social networks. We have similar workplaces, shops, leisure activities, mentality, and ways of treating family, friends, professionals and so on.

2.- What are Beata’s pastimes or hobbies, and what is it that brings you joy and puts a smile on your face?

If I do nothing in my free time, I feel very bad, because days, months and years pass by too quickly. I prefer to do something creative, so I try to use my free hours as much as possible. I love traveling and discovering new places. I organize trips on my own – I research the places to visit, mark them on the map, calculate the time, look for transportation and carry out my plan with the help of GPS! Seeing incredible cities, nature, monuments and art – I love that. Besides, travel teaches you knowledge that is useful in life. Now I want to share my impressions of the places I have visited and the things I have learned, to help others find their destinations and organize trips. Soon I will start making travel videos for my YouTube channel.

I am also motivated and fulfilled by creating videos: planning the content, taking care over how I present it, recording, editing. You can see the results at Beata Aleksiejuk Langauge Channel I also really enjoy programming and creating websites. I know basic programming languages and plan to learn more. Social media marketing and communication are very important to me. I love promoting my videos and communicating with the people who watch my channel.

3.- You hold a degree in Pedagogy specializing in Art Therapy and Animation. What does being an education professional bring you personally, and how did you decide to dedicate your life to teaching?

I finished my university degree as a Cultural Animator in the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology. As an animator I gained knowledge in planning, organization, marketing of culture and events, social engineering and public speaking. These skills help me in creating my language-learning platform on YouTube (Beata Aleksiejuk Language Channel). Soon I will also start publishing themed videos to help people in specific life situations – work, travel, technology and so on. At university I also had many classes in various forms of artistic expression. Knowledge of art helps me create the content of my videos and design marketing materials. Thanks to pedagogy I learned teaching methods, and thanks to psychology I understand people’s needs and interpersonal communication. That is why I can create my language classes using modern educational techniques while keeping others’ needs in mind. I am very interested in new learning methods: online, e-learning.

My education is not only university, but also what I did beyond finishing my degree: taking part in educational organizations, coordinating my own projects (educational and cultural), working in various places and carrying out an Erasmus project in Madrid. The practice that life gave me and real situations taught me more than books did: being solely responsible for an action, coordinating everything, making decisions. Theory is only a small part of what you use; practice helps you run activities better and more efficiently.

4.- Beata, your training and experience as an educator, along with speaking 4 languages, led you to become a communicator on your YouTube channel “Beata Aleksiejuk- Language channel,” where you teach your native language, Polish, to Spanish, Russian and English speakers. How did the idea of sharing not only your language but also your culture with others come about?

I speak 4 languages, and I want my knowledge to serve more people. Besides my native language, Polish, I have learned 3 languages: English, Russian and Spanish. Becoming fluent in 3 foreign languages took me years of study. I want this work to have a common, social use – so I have to put this knowledge to use and not keep it only for myself. I learned English and Russian at school and later improved through practice – working at cultural events and educational activities with foreigners. In Russian I also took part in regional competitions, for which I had to learn a lot, and later I earned a TELC certificate. I started studying Spanish 2 years ago. I first learned with YouTube tutorials and websites. Afterward, real life helped me, along with my work in Madrid and a European Commission course on an online platform. After the Erasmus project I received a Youth Pass certificate confirming my knowledge of Spanish and English. Languages are part of my life. I am fascinated by cultures. It is easier to get to know other countries and to speak when you talk with foreigners and they understand you.

My YouTube channel is not my first attempt at promoting language education. In Białystok I organized the events Cultural Evenings (Tardes Culturales), where people presented their culture and hobbies in English, as well as English-language exchanges. My fascination with foreign languages grew thanks to the success of the public activities I coordinated: they were popular with both foreigners and locals, and the local media began to write about them.

This was my path to creating the YouTube channel. Independence in taking action is something that grows within you, and it sometimes takes years. Now I have decided to create my own courses. The internet gives me the chance to reach people all over the world without barriers. I really like new technology. Thanks to the YouTube channel, I connect all my interests and skills. For example – website creation – I am now building a site for the content of the YouTube course; design – I create the marketing materials; social media – I do the promotion.

5.- You are aware that sharing your language generates greater interest, understanding and attention toward your country, Poland, which makes you a virtual ambassador for those of us who follow your classes. How does it feel to be part of this and to be recognized for showing a piece of Poland to so many people?

I love speaking in public and promoting my country. I’m very happy to be able to exchange knowledge with others. It’s great that people from all over the world can get to know more about Poland – an incredible country that has been developing very quickly in recent years. Poland 20 years ago was not the same Poland we have now. Poland has a very long history – of kings, of years when it was one of the greatest European powers with a culture at a very high level, then destroyed to zero by the partitions and the world wars, and afterward rebuilt thanks to the hard work of Poles. Finally, today it ranks among the most developed countries. It is a country that has everything: sea, lakes, plains, meadows, mountains, interesting natural formations, cities and towns.

I know foreigners who, after spending months in Poland, fell in love with it, and some of them decided to live and work there. But not everyone knows much about my country; it is not a main tourist destination, and there is not as much material on the internet in Russian and Spanish as there is in English. I think my work is very useful in this respect. The channel is open to an audience from almost all over the world – so that many countries and cultures can get to know Poland. Most people can understand my videos because English, Spanish and Russian are international languages – used by many countries. Everyone can find a video in their preferred language.

6.- How have your followers, who grow in number every day and support and value your lessons, received you? How do you like to interact with the new community you are building? What is Beata’s favorite social network?

I’m very happy that the number of followers grows every day. It is the best reward for my work. When I started my channel, I knew that when you decide to become a public person you will face followers who like your work and are very pleased with what you do, but also “enemies.” Still, I have no problem with people who don’t like the channel. Every day I get nice surprises: I receive many positive opinions and messages with very kind comments. I feel that I can really pursue my goal – helping the learning process in a way that my followers enjoy. I treat my YouTube channel as the beginning of a body of work. I have many ideas that I plan to pursue. Every day I think about how to improve the quality of my videos, what resources to add, and what to learn to make it more professional. There is currently a website – Beata Aleksiejuk , which I am going to transform soon. I have also started making forms – quizzes – so my students can practice what they know.

I try to bring my followers together through various social networks, to communicate with them and to exchange useful information.

The most popular social network for promoting the channel is Facebook:

7.- Tell us about your experience with your first videos. Was it difficult or uncomfortable to speak in front of a camera, or had you already been recording before? How can people who want to venture into YouTube or another video-blogging platform overcome stage fright?

It wasn’t very difficult, because it’s not my first time giving talks in front of an audience. I gained experience and self-confidence by coordinating events, trips and music groups at concerts, working as a tour guide in a museum, as a university teacher, as an advisor to foreign students in Białystok, and in looking after project participants in Madrid. Years ago, when I started speaking in public, I was afraid; my head was full of thoughts: I thought about the mistakes I might make, that I would say something illogical, or that I would stop and forget what I wanted to say. But every talk broke down my fear and taught me how to improve my presentations in front of others: how to position my body, look people in the eye, say something interesting, speak fluidly and not in a monotone, with enthusiasm and emotion, convey joy, and be natural.

In the past I gave a few interviews in front of the camera, but I had never tried being a YouTuber. So when I recorded my first videos, I worried a little about whether my body position was right within the frame of the video and whether I was looking in the right direction. There are many things you have to control at the same time – but it is not difficult at all – it can be done. I always try to speak in a way that makes my followers listen attentively. With every video I gain more confidence.

To everyone who wants to present their activities on YouTube, I recommend believing in yourself. Success is connected to your attitude. If you think you can do it – you will.

8.- Do you think some people, journalists and politicians abuse social media, and that there are excesses that should be regulated?

Of course, this happens. Some people don’t like the views and decisions of certain individuals, journalists or politicians. Sometimes they are right and express their opinions very strongly; other times they are just fighting out of rivalry, or they are frustrated with life and want to throw out their negative emotions. Honestly, I don’t know much about this topic. For my part, I prefer to use social media to look for content that builds knowledge, improves life, and helps you become a better and happier person. I don’t like insulting others, living off their lives, criticizing, or reading comments that insult others. I also prefer cooperation to rivalry. To improve life in the world we have to think and act positively, develop technology, infrastructure and culture, and work on modernization, not destruction.

9.- How important do you consider social platforms today, not only for different companies but also for those who create and want to build a personal brand (branding)?

Social media now offers a great opportunity to build a personal brand (branding). You can share the activities you do with others. You can find people who share your interests (on pages and in themed groups). You can communicate with them. Thanks to social media, not only companies but also private individuals build their brand. They can influence the way people see them and perceive their activities. Their messages are heard by internet users. Their followers can also feel close to them and to their lives, almost like friends.

The social networks most used for branding are Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. In professional settings, also LinkedIn. Public figures increase their popularity thanks to them.

Building a brand is a long process that demands a lot of work, personal involvement, and also self-disclosure and self-knowledge.

On the internet there are now many videos, articles, books, programs and personal trainings that speak about branding in a very positive way: a personal brand offers the promise of greater success in the business world. On the other hand, some say that in branding a person is treated in the same way as a brand that is being sold.

10.- Which are the most used and most commercial social networks in Poland? How do you see the development of digital marketing and virtual interaction in your country compared to Spain?

In Poland we use Facebook a lot, mostly to talk with friends, share photos, look at interesting events and create themed groups. It is also used by people who are active, take part in educational organizations, or have interesting hobbies (for example, they sing, paint, dance or take photos). Businesses create their pages on Facebook (Facebook Fanpage) to promote products, activities and events. In my country the second most popular social network is Instagram. There we share photos with friends, edit pictures with filters, and promote a brand or a hobby. LinkedIn accounts are created especially by people with a university degree. It is popular among ambitious people looking for jobs at good companies. Twitter is not as popular; only some people have it. It was used more in the past than it is now. Twitter is used more by public figures and companies.

Poland and Spain don’t have many differences in the use of social media. We use it as much as the Spanish do. The only difference is that in Poland we communicate through Facebook Messenger instead of Whatsapp. Whatsapp is not popular in my country. Only people who communicate with friends abroad have it.

11.- Beata, besides being an educator, polyglot and communicator, you have also developed in the field of programming and its different languages (CSS, HTML, Java Script, Bootstrap, ), web structure, and design for a good user experience (UX). Is it also important how a website looks at first glance?

Knowledge of programming is very useful. Websites are important – now almost everyone has one: every business, school and institution, and people who showcase their hobbies and interests. Websites help us present ourselves and give others information about our services. When many people want to know about a company, the first thing they do is look it up on Google – especially its official website. A professional website is a first letter of introduction and often creates a first impression of the company. It happens that if we can’t find a business’s website, we start to think it isn’t real, doesn’t exist, or is of poor quality. When a page doesn’t look serious, we think the business isn’t serious.

I’m very happy that I was able to take a programming course and gain my first web development experience at the international company Accenture. As a Junior Front End Developer, I enjoy the possibilities that basic programming languages offer me. Creating websites is a process that requires a lot of patience, mathematical and logical thinking, and concentration. But it also gives a lot of pleasure, especially when you see the result. I still plan to learn more programming languages and frameworks, which are very useful. If I could go back in time, I think I would have started earlier to pursue a technical path, close to technology. I discovered that websites and digital work interest me more than anything and offer many opportunities. That is why I try to learn as much as possible every day.

I have my own website, www.beataaleksiejuk.com. For now it is a small letter of introduction. In recent days I have been transforming it into a bigger site with more content: materials from the language classes, and information about travel and technology. I will publish it soon.

Beata Aleksiejuk - poland

12.- What do you think, Beata, about the fact that YouTube and the various social media like YouTube let us meet people with different talents and skills every day?

Of course. Before the internet era, many talents went unknown. Now you can learn how to create social media pages, blogs and videos. We can easily show what we do and what we like. Internet tools help us promote hobbies and activities, help others, and look for information. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to promote your activities. You only have to learn how to use the tools and promotion techniques. For example, if you set the title, tags and description well, your video appears in a good position in YouTube searches and suggestions. Thanks to social media, there are also people who like what you do and share your videos or articles on their profile, and their friends can click the link and get to know you too.

13.- What do you think about the fact that girls are the majority and have the greatest success on YouTube? Do you believe the digital age has made job and education opportunities more democratic, so that something once meant only for men can now also be done by women?

It’s great that many women are successful on YouTube and can make videos about what they like and what is useful to others. From my point of view, in my culture it has been many years since women have had the same opportunities as men. But of course the internet gives more opportunities than before. For most of the world’s history, women did not have as many rights as men. It’s good that now, in many countries and cultures, we can all get an education, work and have the same rights. Girls can be as good as men in many areas of life. Some women are interested in jobs that were once reserved only for men. We see many examples of politicians, activists, police officers, programmers and operators of large machinery who are women and do their jobs well.

14.- Following on from the previous question, how do you see the evolution of women who are taking high positions on every continent, in countries, corporations and politics?

I think this is very good. A man and a woman can be equally successful in positions of responsibility. This has a good influence on the development of the world and on progress.

There are important women in high positions in politics and corporations, and there are also women in science and technology who have discovered very useful tools.

Often they have strength, believe in themselves, are active, never stop in their activities, don’t get discouraged by serious problems, think rationally, and don’t act on the impulse of emotions. Their personalities are admirable and respectful. Even young girls can be authorities.

15.- What is Beata’s personal signature in everything she does?

My personal signature is: believing in dreams, fighting to reach goals, and looking for happiness in every simple moment of life. So I pursue my professional goals, and I fight for my career and success. I want to achieve everything I want. I am not afraid of the difficulties I encounter. I pursue my goals to achieve them with optimism, and I look for joy in all the small moments.

16.- In a previous interview, our guest Anna Hanna, who is of Ukrainian origin, agreed on the importance of education and of preparing men and women well for professional and family life in the countries of the former USSR and the Baltic region, including Poland. Do you agree with this statement?

In Poland, the modern revolution began years ago. I was born in an era of rapid progress. Now we have many women with a university education. There is probably still a lack of interest in technical fields – girls prefer to choose the humanities at university.

Without education it is hard to achieve success and get a good job. From another point of view, the situation is changing a little now – to achieve success and get good jobs, you often have to learn new things that they don’t teach you at university. Finishing your degree is only the first step. You have to learn something new every day. Without a lifelong learning process you can’t achieve success. The world changes and technology develops very quickly. What was current a few months ago is no longer current. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with every new development, but you have to. The internet offers many possibilities, with online courses, tutorials and websites. Thanks to them you can gain the knowledge you need.

17.- What motivates you, and why do you feel grateful every day?

I am motivated by developing my skills. It makes me happy to do activities in everything I truly like. I love developing on my own: learning new things, gaining knowledge, striving for perfection. I also love creating materials that help others. I am motivated by work that succeeds. For example, with my YouTube channel, it makes me smile when the materials I create look good, have a nice appearance, and are useful to others.

I feel grateful that I’ve been able to learn 4 languages, pick up basic knowledge of programming, and start creating my own learning materials: YouTube – Beata Aleksiejuk Language Channel, website – www.beataaleksiejuk.com.

18.- Who does Beata admire? Do you have a phrase or motto that you practice daily or like to mention?

I don’t follow any one person in particular. I think my life is what I build for myself. I try to look for happiness in life, be grateful for every small moment, develop what I like, be independent in my activities, and not think about difficulties. When something doesn’t succeed, I try to learn from it. If something goes very well, I try to improve it to make it more perfect. I never stop pursuing my goals.

Beata Aleksiejuk - Youtuber

19.- What would you say to young people who have great talent or ability but don’t dare take the next step and act? What would you say to parents who don’t support their children’s talent?

Young friends, what are you waiting for? Life is too short. You have to do what you love now. You never know what successes await you in your lives. Anyone can be a successful person. You can do everything you want. You only have to believe in yourselves and change the way you think to a more positive one. Are you afraid? – I agree that it is often not easy to fight for your goals, but don’t let that fear scare you. Never stop! In the end, a great reward awaits you for your work. Many famous people were at first not understood by those around them. In the end, the product of their work was appreciated. And being creative and doing what you love brings you joy.

Parents, your son or daughter is a good person – they have their goals and want to grow. You are the authorities who should support them; you have a lot of influence on their lives. Who is going to help them if not you? You are the most important people to them. Your children need you in their success and in the pursuit of their goals and hobbies. You love each other, and love can do more than anything. Strengthen their sense of worth, and one day you will have genius children.

20.- Beata, what do you know about Peru, and what places in the country would you like to see? Besides Peru, what other Latin American countries would you like to visit?

Peru is located in the western part of South America. It is the third largest country after Brazil and Argentina. It is close to the Pacific Ocean. It is an incredible country, with beautiful nature, and is very well known for Machu Picchu and the ancient Inca culture. Machu Picchu is tons of walls, enormous blocks, and buildings set against panoramic views. Its original use remains a mystery. The Incas worshipped their rulers, and stone pyramids were built in their honor. The land of the Incas is also known for its extensive irrigation system – irrigation of agricultural fields. The Incas had their own gods and lived in harmony with nature. Later the land of the Incas was seized by Spain and became the most powerful Spanish colony. Now Peru is a Republic.

In Peru I would like to visit Machu Picchu, with its beautiful view of nature and the mountains; Lima – the capital and a very well-known city; the Amazon jungle, for example Manu National Park; Nazca and its big mysterious figures drawn in the desert; Cuzco; and Lake Titicaca.

21.- Thank you very much, Beata. This part is yours: your final words for our readers and your followers.

Thank you very much for your interest in my profile and for the opportunity of this interview. I’m very happy to share my life and hobbies with you. It was a pleasure to get in touch with you. Also, the Perú Mira website is a great idea for sharing information about technology and giving opportunities to active young people who do interesting things. I wish you great success in the digital education of people who live in Peru and of all Spanish speakers. I am going to follow the development of your project. On the Perú Mira website there are many interesting articles and interviews. By reading them you can learn about digital topics. You are doing a good job, and I love the idea behind your project. Thank you very much, and good luck once again.

** Thank you very much, Beata, for being from now on part of our guests. We not only wish you the greatest success, but also want you to know you have our team for whatever may come up.
