In this exclusive interview, Mia Sofía Medina shares her thoughts on Puerto Rican culture, her experiences in the world of teen pageantry, and how she plans to use her platform to inspire the next generation of young women around the world.
1.- Mia, tell me about the city where you were born and raised. What do you like about your hometown?
I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Growing up, I had the privilege of living close to my mom’s side of the family our entire neighborhood felt like one big family reunion every day. I have the fondest memories of coming home from school and spending time with my cousins, laughing while my aunt cooked for all of us. Those moments, filled with joy and togetherness, shaped who I am today. Bayamón will always be a special place to me, not just because it’s where I grew up in but for the love and unity it gave me from an early age.
2.- What are your hobbies? what makes you laugh a lot or gives you joy?
I’m naturally a very active person, I love staying busy and trying new things. I’ve explored sports like volleyball and tennis, and I really enjoy staying athletic. However, modeling has been my true passion ever since I was a child. It’s where I feel most like myself, where I can express who I am. What fills me with the most joy, though, is spending time with my family. Whether it’s a beach day or just relaxing by the pool with my dad, siblings, and our dogs, those moments are priceless. Seeing my mom, dad, brother, and sister happy brings me so much light, and being with them always makes me feel complete.
3.- International Model, Miss Puerto Rico Teen 2024. When did you decide to take your first steps as a model and beauty pageants? What feeling do you have achieving your dreams, your passions and being a recognized influencer woman today?
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been captivated by the world of modeling and pageants. I grew up watching shows like Nuestra Belleza Latina, and I’m still inspired by the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows and Miss Universe videos. These shows inspired me immensely. Pageants have been my dream for as long as I can remember, and those closest to me know how significant this journey has been. Encouragement from people in the industry and the support from my family gave me the push I needed to pursue it at the perfect time.
I am filled with immense gratitude and happiness, achieving this as Miss Puerto Rico Teen 2024 is a dream come true, and I owe so much to the special people who believed in me before the journey even began. This only fuels my desire to keep chasing my dreams, with my goal of one day becoming Miss Universe
4.- What do you think is the distinctive, unique stamp of Mia in each activity carried out as a beauty queen and model?
I believe the distinctive stamp I bring to every activity as a beauty queen and model is the combination of perseverance and passion. For me, it’s not just about achieving goals, but about pouring my heart into everything I do. I always strive to stay authentic to who I am, and I’m a firm believer that when you pursue something with genuine dedication and love, it creates a unique energy that no one else can replicate. That’s what makes every moment truly mine.
5.- What’s is the main virtue that any woman must have to be an international model?
I believe that empathy and confidence are virtues that make a true queen. Understanding and connecting with the people around you are extremely important. People appreciate seeing someone who embodies more than just a “pretty face.” When you can relate to others and demonstrate genuine care, it creates a deeper connection. I also believe in being secure in your true self, it’s essential to know who you are, what you represent, and the unique qualities you bring to the table. A model should always embrace her individuality and what make she unique with grace
6.- Are you aware of being an influential woman for thousands of girls who want to be models? How important is it to you to be an idol for many girls and teenagers?
Honestly, it feels a little surreal at times to realize that so many young girls look up to me and feel inspired by my journey. I’m genuinely amazed by the number of girls who have reached out, asking for advice on how to enter the world of pageants themselves. It’s incredibly important to me to share with them that I was once in their shoes. I had this dream for so long, and like many of them, I sometimes held myself back.
What I tell each girl is to pursue what truly fills their heart. It’s normal to feel nervous—I was nervous too but I don’t regret taking that leap. If becoming a model or participating in pageants is their passion, they should go for it wholeheartedly. I feel honored to be a part of their journey and hope to inspire them to chase their dreams without hesitation.
7.- What was your feeling the first time you modeled in front of a video camera? What did you feel the first time at a beauty pageant?
I’ve always had a natural love for the camera, I loved taking theater class, taking videos, etc…Till this day, I love recording everything , pretending I’m a YouTuber, so stepping in front of a video camera feels like second nature to me. However, my first beauty pageant experience was something else entirely. At the preliminary competition, I was filled with so much excitement and adrenaline. I remember feeling like I couldn’t stop shaking out of pure joy. It was a surreal moment to realize I was living the dream I had always envisioned, with my family there cheering me on. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
8.- What do you think about the power of social media today?
I think it’s incredible to see how social media has evolved and continues to shape our world every day. It can be a powerful tool for change. However, it’s also heartbreaking to see the negative effects it can have, especially on young girls who may compare themselves to unrealistic standards. This can impact mental health in serious ways, and I believe it’s important for this generation to take a moment to disconnect and focus on real, meaningful connections. As someone who values the positive impact social media can bring, my mission is to connect with people across the world and use it to raise awareness about gender inequality and violence against women.
9.- What would you advise young people who have talent but do not dare to take the next step? What would you advise parents who do not support their children’s talents?
My advice is simple: don’t overthink it—take the leap! I’ve been in those shoes before. For a long time, I dreamed of competing in pageants, but I let fear and doubt hold me back. Now, I sometimes regret not starting sooner. I would tell them to be brave, pursue their passions, and do it while they still have the chance. I’ve been incredibly blessed to have supportive parents, but I understand that not everyone has that. It’s important to remember that what happens or doesn’t happen with the things we love can deeply impact us. Try to put yourselves in your children’s shoes, remember your support can make all the difference, encourage them to follow their passions.
10.- What important lessons have you learned from the world of fashion and beauty pageants?
I’ve learned that our differences are what truly make us unique, and it’s essential not to compare ourselves to others. In the world of fashion and beauty pageants, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to emulate someone else’s look or persona due to their visibility. But we must remember that our true value lies in our hearts and personalities. There’s nothing more rewarding than embracing your authentic self, it’s what resonates most with people and brings genuine happiness.
11.- Mia, being a model for you has been easy? Were there obstacles? How did you overcome obstacles?
Modeling is my passion and I’ve been involved in it for quite some time, it hasn’t always been easy. The industry is filled with incredibly talented and beautiful people, which can lead to competition and comparison. There were moments when I dreamed of walking for certain designers and dreamed of walking in New York, only to be told that I didn’t have the right body type for it. That feedback made me doubt myself for a while. But instead of allowing those doubts to deter me, I chose to turn that negativity into motivation. I used it as fuel to work harder, to focus on my strengths, continued to improve my skills, and surrounded myself with supportive people who believed in me. I’ve always been very determined, and I had a goal so I proudly embraced my unique qualities and used them to achieve my goals.
12.- Have you thought about being an actress? Do you like the entertainment industry?
Absolutely! As a child, I took theater classes and did plays, and a couple of years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the crew for an HBO series, which I absolutely loved, it felt surreal! My aunt is an actress in Argentina, and my mom often tells me that I get my passion for the arts from her. I’ve always enjoyed being in front of the camera, whether it’s for modeling, acting, or even dancing. The entertainment industry excites me, and to be honest I’ve always wanted to explore all the creative paths it has to offer!
13.- Worldwide, women have acquired a greater role even though there are societies where they are still abused. What is your opinion of the role of women in the future in these societies?
This topic is very close to my heart, and I plan to use my new project, “Voces Valientes,” to raise awareness about it. I believe we have moved beyond the era where women were seen as incapable of achieving certain things. Gender inequality is a very real societal issue that needs to be addressed. I firmly believe that women have the same rights as men to pursue their dreams and ambitions. We are leaders and we are capable. In the future, I envision a society where these stereotypes and stigmas of women are broken and women are empowered, realizing their potential. I believe not only women, but everyone can unite to create an equitable world where everyone, regardless of gender, can succeed and thrive.
14.- Mia, what is your motivation and what do you feel grateful for every day?
My deepest motivation comes from the support of my family, along with my own determination. They have always been my biggest supporters, inspiring me to reach for the stars and pursue my dreams. I remind myself that true greatness requires hard work and resilience, and that my greatest competition is the version of myself I was yesterday. Each day is an opportunity for growth. I am most grateful to God and my family for the strength and encouragement they provide me. Their support fuels my journey, my studies at university to my endeavors in the pageant world.
15.- Mia, Do you like to travel? What countries do you know? What other countries would you like to know and which places do you recommend to visit from your country?
I absolutely love the idea of exploring new places, but I’ve only had the chance to visit Los Angeles and Florida so far. I enjoy seeing how people fall in love with Puerto Rico’s unique culture and beauty, and I share that same desire to experience new cultures myself. One country I’ve always dreamed of visiting is Italy, its beauty fascinates me. As for Puerto Rico, I believe it has some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. My personal favorite is playa de Tortugas in Culebra, it’s like a paradise straight out of a movie.

I want everyone to know how special this journey is to me. It may sound cliché, but this is truly a dream come true, I’ve wanted it since I was a little girl. I’m incredibly grateful to God, my family, and the people who have been supporting me since the beginning. My biggest advice is to always believe in yourself, if you have a passion or dream, go straight for it, don’t let obstacles or fear stand in the way of pursuing what your heart truly desires. Trust yourself, you can genuinely achieve anything you put your heart and mind to.
