Hi! My name is Dorine Kliffen, I’m 33 years old, and I’m from the Netherlands. I’m a songwriter and the lead singer of the band Levikta. I recently graduated with a degree in Social Work (HBO) and plan to start my own coaching practice called Be adorible. My goal is to help other introverted individuals like myself navigate and thrive in this extroverted world!

1.- Can you share with us your journey as a singer-songwriter? How did you start writing your own music?
Since I was little, I’ve always loved to sing. My mother sang in a choir, and my father played the clarinet, so I grew up surrounded by music. As a kid, I even used a jump rope as a microphone (see picture), so I think I started singing before I could talk. I began writing music when I was younger, mainly creating choruses that would get stuck in my head. Later, in my twenties, I took singing lessons. After my mom passed away, I enrolled in a “Signature Song” course, which really helped me start writing my own music about my personal experiences.

2.- What inspired you to pursue a career in music, and who were some of your early influences?
My love for music and singing started with my mother. We watched musicals like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, along with other Disney movies. As a teenager, I started listening to a lot of pop music on TV, like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and girl groups such as The Sugababes and Atomic Kitten. A classmate and friend from high school introduced me to Evanescence, Tokio Hotel, and Within Temptation, which exposed me to different genres early on. My parents were also into classical music, which gave me an appreciation for a wide variety of artists. But my biggest influence now is Lady Gaga. I love how versatile she is—she can go from pop to jazz, to metal, and even performed a Sound of Music mashup at the Oscars!

3.- As a composer, what is your creative process like when writing new songs? Do you start with lyrics, a melody, or something else?
Mostly I just play some chords on my keyboard and check if it sounds good together. I also start by writing an catchy course and from there I write the verses and the bridge. Mostly I already have a catchy tune in my head and try to make something out of it and then write something about my own experiences in life.

4.- What advice would you give to parents who want to support their children’s musical talents and aspirations?
Encourage your children to explore their musical interests and provide them with the tools and opportunities to practice. As a composer, my process usually starts with playing some chords on my keyboard and seeing if they sound good together. I often begin by writing a catchy chorus and then build the verses and bridge from there. Most of the time, I already have a melody in my head that I try to shape into something meaningful, and then I write lyrics based on my own life experiences. I also get a lot of help from my friend, who is a pianist, when I have difficulty finding the right chords and music. Supporting your child’s musical journey can involve offering encouragement, resources, and access to mentors who can guide them in their creative endeavors.

5.- How do you balance your personal life with the demands of being a singer-songwriter and composer?
To be honest, it’s not too difficult right now because we’ve just started as a band and are focusing on gaining more exposure, booking gigs, and getting our music out there. Music is also a significant part of my personal life. When something challenging happens, I cope better by writing music. For example, the song “Fighting Back” was inspired by a difficult experience with a coworker. Writing that song felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, almost like a form of therapy.

6.- What role does female empowerment play in your music, and how do you strive to convey this message through your songs?
I mainly write about my own experiences as a woman, so it’s not always explicitly about female empowerment. However, as mentioned earlier, my song “Fighting Back” can be seen as a form of female empowerment, as it deals with standing up for oneself when faced with challenges, such as difficulties with a coworker. Through my music, I aim to convey messages of resilience and strength, which can resonate with themes of empowerment.

7.- Which artists or musicians do you admire the most, and why do they inspire you?
I admire Lady Gaga the most because of her incredible versatility with her voice. I aspire to have that level of diversity in my own singing. I also admire Lzzy Hale from the band Halestorm; I love how she can powerfully deliver her vocals, including intense screams. I would love to learn and develop those skills in the future.

8.- Have you had the opportunity to perform or collaborate with any of the artists you admire? If so, what was that experience like?
Not yet, but I do enjoy singing with Nadieh, the pianist I mentioned earlier. I love the harmonies we create together, and I think we make a great duo. It’s also a lot of fun to make music with the rest of the band and see how they bring the lyrics to life in the end!

9.- Is there a particular artist or musician you dream of sharing the stage with in the future?
I would love to share the stage with Lady Gaga, or really any artist who is enjoyable to work with. It would also be fantastic to collaborate with Lindsey Stirling. I think she is an amazing violinist and dancer, and it would be incredible to create a hit together and perform it.

10.- How do you think social media has impacted the music industry, and how do you use it to connect with your audience?
Social media has had a significant impact on the music industry, both positively and negatively. It allows artists to connect with their audience directly and instantly, which is great for building a following and sharing updates. However, it also has its downsides, such as the potential for negativity and harsh comments about an artist’s appearance. Social media often leaves little room for errors and mistakes, which can be challenging for artists. Despite these challenges, I use platforms like Instagram to engage with my fans, share my music, and keep them updated on my latest projects.

11.- What challenges have you faced as a woman in the music industry, and how have you overcome them?
One challenge I currently face is dealing with inappropriate comments from some men when I wear certain outfits. It’s frustrating that something as simple as choosing performance attire can lead to unwanted and disrespectful remarks. I try to focus on my music and performance rather than letting these comments affect me. Maintaining confidence and professionalism helps me to overcome these challenges and stay focused on my goals.

12.- Can you describe your preparation process, both mentally and physically, before going on stage or entering the recording studio?
Preparation is key for me. I focus on practicing regularly to ensure I’m well-prepared. Before going on stage, I might feel nervous, but seeing the rest of the band ready and enthusiastic helps me overcome that. I also engage in mental preparation by visualizing a successful performance and reminding myself of the hard work I’ve put in. This combination of practice and mental readiness helps me feel confident and focused, whether I’m performing live or recording in the studio.

13.- What do you find most rewarding about being a singer-songwriter and composer, and what keeps you motivated to create new music?
The most rewarding aspect of being a singer-songwriter and composer is when people connect with my music and feel a deep connection with the lyrics and melodies. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my work resonates with others. I’m also motivated to create new music because collaborating with friends is both enjoyable and inspiring. Additionally, writing music serves as a therapeutic outlet for me, helping me process and release emotions, which keeps me driven to continue creating.

14.- How do you handle creative blocks or moments when inspiration is hard to come by?
When I experience creative blocks or find inspiration hard to come by, I find that jamming with the band or playing solo on the keyboard often helps me overcome these moments. Additionally, attending a singer-songwriter course can be very motivating, as it provides new perspectives and techniques that stimulate my creativity. Engaging in these activities usually helps me get back on track and find new ideas for my music.

15.- What has been the most memorable moment in your music career so far?
One of the most memorable moments in my music career has been performing with the band Levikta. A few months ago, we had the opportunity to play three sets of 30 minutes each for an audience, which was both challenging and exciting. Remembering all the lyrics was a test of our preparation, but it was incredibly rewarding to perform our music for people in someone’s garden. That experience truly highlighted the joy and connection that live performances bring.

16.- How do you see your music evolving in the future? Are there any new styles or genres you’d like to explore?
Currently, I am exploring rock and metal with Levikta, and I am excited to improve my singing and songwriting in these genres. In the future, I would love to release a solo album, collaborating with the right producer and team to bring my vision to life as a pop-rock solo artist. I am eager to explore new styles and continue evolving my sound to reflect my artistic growth.

17.- What are your long-term goals as a singer-songwriter and composer? Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
In the next five years, I hope to see Levikta thriving with more performances and growing our fan base. Additionally, I aspire to release my own solo album and establish myself as a pop-rock artist. I envision balancing my time between performing with the band and pursuing my solo career, with the goal of reaching a broader audience and making my music heard.
